So you're saying that you can boot your kernel when you copy
it to the virtual disk but that you cannot boot it when you
use GRUB to tftp it and load it (without copying it to the
virtual disk), right ?
If so, the problem is likely with GRUB itself, which may
take a few shortcuts. Just copy your kernel ;-)
