building environment

If this helps: I have been able to build OsKit in every POSIX compliant
operating system that I've used: Slackware, Redhat, and Mandrake Linux, and
FreeBSD. I always keep my make, binutils, and gcc compilers up to date. I
find that Linux Mandrake (8.0) is the best for this because the software
manager (in KDE & Gnome) allows you to keep up to date without having to
worry about annoying installations of compilers!
I have tried to build oskit in cygwin (... for Windows I think that's how
it's spelled), but have found that difficult.
I'm also pretty sure (am planning on using it, but have not had time to
setup a workstation) that oskit will compile under Solaris UNIX 8.

I'm not sure what the "prefered" environment is exactly... but I have ALWAYS
been successful with these operating systems. I believe that Linux-Mandrake
8.0 is the best at the moment for my needs... I'm sure there are plenty who
disagree, but it works for me.
