Subject: (Q) Mac OS 8

I've just installed Mac OS 8, having used previously 7.6. Just a couple of
questions for an Info-Mac savant.

1) What is the Text Encoding Converter for? What are all the text encoding
files in Preferences for? Are either necessary?

2) I found, relative to 7.6, that there was a noticeable delay in the
drawing of the contents of a folder when the folder is opened. Anyone else
notice this? Any way to speed up the window drawing process?

Thanks in advance!

Dave,

Make the window the active window and select 'View Options' from the 'View'
menu. On the right-hand side of the dialog box you'll see check boxes to
turn on/off the different columns. Uncheck the 'Date Modified' and 'Date
Created' columns and the 'Size' column will be second. I don't think you
can reorder the columns with straight OS8.

Thanx! I'll have a talk with my optician. Really stupid to overlook this
feature.

Now does one of you happen to know how to get rid of the zooming
rectangles? For obvious reasons Secret Finder Features and Hidden Finder
Features don't do the trick with the completly rewritten Finder 8.0.

I remembered an old ResEdit hack - one of the first I did after I started
to work with Macs, two and a half year ago - found in "ResEdit Complete" by
Peter Alley and Carolyn Strange (Addison-Wesley, ISBN 0-201-62686-1)

It goes like this:
- Open (a copy of) the Finder
- Open CODE resource ID=4
- Find Hex $4E56FFE048E71F38
replace it with
- Hex $700A205FDEC04ED0
(This are all zeroes, not the letter O)
At the time this worked perfect.

Yesterday I opened (a copy of) Finder 8.0 in Nortons Disk Editor (the
resource fork doesn't contain the CODE resource ID=4 no more) and I found
at sector $484 of the data fork at offset $0B0 the same string starting
with $4E56...., replaced it with the string starting with $700A.....,
saved the changes, replaced the original Finder with the hacked one,
restarted and found the hack working somewhat, a little bit. It could be my
imagination, but I estimate the zooming decreases about 50%(??). It's
certainly not gone though.

Mysteries and questionsmarks. Food for thought, sure, but I cann't digest
it at this moment. I'll start digging into usenet eventually, not one of my
favorite means of passing the time, so if one of you got any ideas, please
let me know

Dave

Subject: [Q] "Turing" Language for Macintosh? (CodeWarrior??)

Hi, I am taking a computer programming course this year in High School,
and we will be using the Turing language (developed for education) to
work with. I would like to know if there is any Turing development
packages available for Macintosh, that would preferably be able to save
projects as PC/DOS executables as well as being able to run them on the
Mac. (All the computers there are PCs.)

Or even better, since I have CodeWarrior Gold (9), it would be great if
there was an extension to CW that allowed it to use the Turing language
to create Macintosh and PC programs.

Thanks for your help,
Andrew Murray, amurray@kos.net

P.S.
Please send replies directly to my e-mail address (as well as posting to
the list if you wish).

Subject: MacPPP (Best of PPP) 2.2.0 problem

Hi,

I have a Mac Performa 6400/200 running System 7.5.5 with OT 1.1.2 and
MacPPP (Best of PPP) 2.2.0 using a GeoPort Express modem. I can
establish a ppp connection and work successfully and then either hard or
soft close the connection.

When I attempt to open a consecutive session the open button does not
respond and it is necessary for me to restart the mac in order to open a
ppp connection.

The original problem I had was that I couldn't close my ppp connection
and had to reboot my mac to do it - I upgraded to OT 1.1.2 and this
brought me to the current problem. I've tried out other versions of PPP
including Steve Dagley's FreePPP but this fails to negotiate the connect
procedure despite me trying out numerous variations of the login script.

Has anyone got any help, tips or comments?

Thanks,

Check the Startup Items folder in the System Folder. Does it contain any
aliases? Hope this helps. Cheers,

That worked! I had put an alias of Darkside in the startup folder without
transferring the original to my hard disk. THANKS-

Subject: Q Tiled Icons on CD-ROMS

A client wants me to include their logo in the main Finder window of a CD
I'm preparing for them - you know, the type of thing that Adobe started
using and now everyone is catching on with. I can't find what tool is used
to split up an image into all those 32x32 pixel icons. Surely its not done
by hand?

David,

It sounds like you probably have an alias to something that used to reside
on that disk in your startup folder.

Subject: Video Card for the PB3400?

My department is planning to buy a PB3400/240, and I would appreciate it
very much if any of you Mac gurus could help me with the following two
queries:

1. Is it possible to install a Video Card allowing the PB3400 to drive a
21" Monitor in 24-bit mode? If positive, any clues on where to buy it?

2. Has anyone experienced installing the 128Mb RAM memory module? If
positive, does one need to be a certified Apple technician, or an
electronic wizard?

Thanks very much in advance for any help!
