Howdy,

Can anybody tell me what became of Ocean Technologies? They made an early
Bernouli-type drive and I need to talk to them.

TIA,

Dear (experienced?) Macfellows

Could you give me some advise!
Is OS8 only for PowerMacs, though it also will run on 040s with loads of
RAM? Will I waste my money upgrading to OS8 on my 840 AV?

TIA

[EMAILED AND POSTED TO INFO-MAC DIGEST]

Here's how to do it: throw away the AppleShare Prep file, which is in the
Preferences Folder in the System Folder. That'll do it. Unfortunately, if you
have any other auto-logins set up, it'll get rid of them, too.

Which brings me to my question: where I work (NASA Marshall Space Flight
Center), my users will sometimes set up auto-logins to temporary servers that
go away/are taken down eventually. However, the "login" message for these
comes up every time they start their machines. Since the temporary servers
are no longer on the network, they can't just go into the Chooser and
"uncheck the auto-login box."

Is there a way to edit the AppleShare Prep file in order to delete one or
more auto-logins without disturbing others? (Some of our users have
auto-logins to as many as 6 or 7 AppleShare servers, and it's a pain to have
to re-establish all of them in order to delete just one "faulty" one...)

Cheers!

Hmm. Just minutes ago I finished a generic clean installation of MacOS 8
on the same hardware, 7200/120 + Pentium 100 card. The card continues to
work fine in all respects: basic operation, networking, shared folders,
clipboard transfer.

I'm running version 1.5.5 of the compatibility software, which is the
latest official release for this card (I have 1.6 but I haven't seen any
reason to install it yet). After the clean install of MacOS 8, all I did
was to drag the PC-card extensions and control panel from the Previous
System Folder into the new System Folder and reboot. It was not necessary
to reinstall the 1.5.5 compatibility software.

You're not using RamDoubler, are you? In any case, whatever went wrong
with your installation, it's not a general problem. The card, with 1.5.5
software, is happy to coexist with MacOS 8.0.

I figured out why I could not run the PC side on my Power Mac 7200 PC
compatible computer under OS 8:

The problem was caused by a conflict between Ram Doubler 2 and OS 8. The
same bug also prevents me from mounting floppies on the Mac with Ram
Doubler running.
Connectix knows about the bug and they are working on a fix.

Subject: Desk chair recommendations?

This is not strictly Mac related, but since it is directly related to the
use of Macs, I hope you will indulge me.

I spend a lot of time at my desk at home. I do at least half of my work
from there. I use my computer there, I do paperwork there, I read there.
I watch TV there, pet my cats there, talk on the phone there. On more
than one occasion I have fallen asleep there. I think I deserve a *really*
good chair. Value is important, but price isn't so much, if you know what
I mean. This is an investment in my properly-ergonomic future.

I want an adjustable back angle. I want an extra high back (shoulders at
least, head rest preferred). I'd like to be able to tilt it back, or lock
it in place; maybe tilt in any conceivable direction. I want a contoured
seat. Good lumbar support. Arms that are adjustable in height.
Antigravity mode. So many levers and knobs on the underside of the seat
that I need a manual to figure it all out. No leather.

Does anyone have a good recommendation, or know where I should start
looking? I will summarize once I get a good idea of what is available.

Regards,
Chris

My ATI Xclaim 3D card control panel allows a variety of standard setting
Hertz rates and some nonstandard rates that I must manually adjust the
horizontal and vertical positions of the picture on my monitor, but all look
fine:

512 x 384 70hz
640 x 480 60hz, 67, 72, 75, 85
800 x 600 56hz, 60, 72, 75, 85
823 x 624 75hz
1024 x 768 60hz, 70 75
The manual says it has an even larger number setting, but maybe my 17"
monitor isn't large enough

Subject: Netscape, Eudora, PPP and japanese language kit

A japanese friend of mine has aked me some questions, but I can't answer.
Can you?
She's working with a PowerBook 1400, System 7.5.x (I presume, since she
just bought it in Japan), japanese language kit, and a set of Internet
application, jap release (Netscape 1.0, Eudora Pro 2.1.3, Fetch, etc).
I supplied more recent releases of Netscape 3.0, Eudora 3.0 Lite, english
release, with FreePPP 2.5, but these seems not to read the Kanji characters
(since she works with Japan, she needs to read/write in japanese).

a) Netscape 3.0 (english release) can recognize Kanji (japanese)
characters? This friend of mine has Netscape 1.0 japanese release, and it
works. How can I make it work?

b) same question as above but with Eudora. The english release can
read/write in japanese?

c) The PB 1400 comes with the usual Apple Internet Suite: MacTCP and config
PPP (not FreePPP 2.x).
It seems like that Netscape 1.0 jap doesn't work with FreePPP 2.5 (that is
required by the Internet Provider here in Italy - yes, Milano!).
Does anybody knows if Netscape 1.0 jap _requires_ PPP?

d) any suggestion about working with Internet applications, PowerBooks and
the japanese (people and characters)?

TIA

Subject: Wierd monitor problem

I've had a PowerMac 7200/75 with 40 m of RAM for about a year, and the
warranty is about to run out. I've always had a strange problem with the
monitor. Sometimes when the screen redraws (this problem was brought to
my attention when I started marathon and the splash screen came up) small
1/4 inch 1-pixel thick lines are interspersed with the picture for a
split second. A consultant I asked told me he thought it was a bug in
system 7.5, but I'm doubting this opinion...anyone have any ideas aside
from the standard troubleshooting?

Thank you in advance,

Hans
