Subject: (Q) convert .mov to System 7 snd

is there software that can convert .mov files to System 7 format...?

situation: I bought Kaboom! 3.0 (control panel) which plays sounds of my
choosing in random order at random times. I bought After Dark 4.0 which
has its Baby Toasters Music as a .mov file. Kaboom! doesn't recognize
.mov files. Kaboom! Factory 3.0 (app) can record and save new sounds as
System 7 but can't seem to open existing .mov files.

I can go from System 7 to .mov, but not the other way around. I've al-
ready contacted the makers of Kaboom!, and they're really nice but don't
seem to have an answer. I have tried numerous sound editing and con-
verting programs to no avail. I need to hear from people who have al-
ready done this, not who know of software that is *suppose* to do this.

All I want to do is have the Baby Toaster Music played periodically in
the background while I work. If I can't do it via a software-only so-
lution soon, I'll have to resort to using a friend's Mac to play the
.mov file through an audio cable to *my* Mac running Kaboom! Factory to
record it, but that seems so pedestrian... Please, help...!

Thanks! ds. =)

Subject: [?] netscape and 7.6 crashes

I have just installed System 7.6.1 on my Power Mac 6100 and I can no longer
use Netscape 3.0.
I can't log on to my ISP. I keep getting the error message that Netscape was
unable to connect immediately upon trying to access my mail. It dosen't even
try dialing out through Free PPP 2.5.2 first. I've tried it with virtual
memory on and off no good either way. If I try launching Free PPP first it
may connect (50% chance) but FreePPP will not open netscape as it is told to
in its preferences file. I've tried replacing both Netscape's and PPP's
preference files, no good. It seems to be a direct conflict between the
system software and Netscape.
If I start off another drive that still has System 7.5.5 installed
everything works fine!!

I have System 7.6.1
Open transport 1.1.2
Netscape 3.0
claris emailer lite 1.1v4 (also won't work).

Anybody have any solutions?? I read before in the digest that others have had
this problem but i don't rember finding a solution.
How about Netscape 4.0, has anybody tried it?

Subject: [A] Answers: AppleTalk shutoff using AppleScript?

For the benefit of other AppleScript novices, here's a summary of the
answers to my question about how to turn off AppleTalk via AppleScript:

(AppleTalk interferes with audio editing applications when recording and I
always forget to turn it off between sessions after using Netscape. I
discovered that AppleScript cannot by itself control AppleTalk.)

[Solution #1]

AppleTalk may not have to be turned on at all to use Internet-aware
applications under System 7.6.1 open transport!

Absolute heresy for those familiar with pre-open transport days, but true.
Unless one is using an AppleTalk-dependent application such as ARA 2.0 to
connect to the 'net, AppleTalk can remain off and Netscape, Fetch, etc.
seem to work just fine.

[Solution #2]

Extend AppleScript's vocabulary with an extension found on info-mac.

  * Download /info-mac/dev/osa/appletalk-access-osax-101.hqx
  * Unstuff and drag "AppleTalk OSAX" to the "Scripting Additions" folder
located in the Extensions folder within the System Folder
  * Restart
  * Open the AppleScript "Script Editor"
  * Enter this one-line script (without quotes): "AppleTalk off"
  * Run script to test - yup, AppleTalk turns off
  * Select menu "File:Save As Run-Only" to save as self-running application
  * Choose "Kind:Application" from the pop-up menu
  * Drag newly-created application to "Startup Items" folder in System Folder
  * Restart - AppleTalk will turn off at every bootup

Many thanks to all who responded with suggestions. This community of
sharing is what makes info-mac so useful and one more reason why the Mac is
the one true computer for the rest of us.

I don't know what the OT errors mean but if you just want a script to check
to see if a particular app is running, the following should work. You need
Mark Alldritt's freeware Script Tools "Processes" osax (I don't remember if
I got it at Info-Mac).

Just change "Finder" to the desired app (Eudora Internet Mail Server, in
your case - check this!) and the beep commands to the desired commands.
Have fun!

jp

--begin script
set TestingProc to list processes
set NumberTimesToRun to number of items in TestingProc

--tests each process that's running to see if it's named Finder
repeat with i from 1 to NumberTimesToRun
set TheProc to item i of TestingProc
set ProcInfo to get process TheProc
set ProcName to process name of ProcInfo
if ProcName is equal to "Finder" then
		beep 2
	else
		beep 7
	end if

end repeat
--end script

Subject: [Q] Mounting UNIX Drive

Does any one know if there is an ARA-like program out there that allows
one to mount a UNIX drive on your desktop? I commonly have telnet and
ftp applications open to the same directory to handle file transfers and
maintenance, and believe that these functions can be handled better
through integration with the Finder.

If this type of product does not exist already, development of this would
certainly interest me. Does anyone have any pointers on this?

Subject: e-mate vs. powerbook query

I have an e-mate vs. powerbook query. My wife's Franklin Planner has
expanded past the point of reasonable portability. She would love to
replace it with an e-mate (she has played with my Messagepad 2000 +
keyboard) but hesitates for one simple reason. The keyboard Apple ships
with the MP2K has an audible key click feedback mechanism which would make
the keyboard too noisy for note taking in small 5-6 person meetings. The
keyboards on the powerbooks I have had experience with (540, 5300, and
3400) can all be used silently if one types gently. So, the question
becomes; does the keyboard in the e-mate use the same mechanism as the one
that comes with the MP2k or is it one that can be used silently? An
obvious alternative to the e-mate would be the 2400 (when it starts
shipping). This has real pros and cons. She loves the idea of being able
to take notes that include free-form sketches, easy with the e-mate but
awkward at best with the 2400. Can anyone with experience with an e-mate
offer thoughts or advice?

Thanks,
Bill

Subject: IE and Easy Open file confusion (Q)

There's weirdness on my desktop:
Via Internet Explorer, I began downloading a file called Filename.sit (the
name has been changed to protect the innocent), then I cancelled the
download. Subsequently other files downloaded by IE are identified with
KIND Filename.sit, which is not an application. The problem does not go
away until I deactiviate the Easy Open control panel (using Extensions
Manager).

This is not a good thing. Can someone help with a solution? Thanks.

Eudora cannot run a script as a filter action. This would be a useful
feature, so you might want to write to their suggestion address and
suggest it. (It's been discussed before. :-))

Another way to do this would be for Eudora to tell a script application
that mail has arrived. Unfortuantely, *this* couldn't be done because of
a strange bug in AppleScript that wouldn't let the script application get
the contents of the Apple Event in question, although it apparently worked
fine with Frontier. If the script couldn't actually get the list of new
messages, it couldn't DO anything with the list.

So the short answer is no. :-(

Unfortunately, the Amplification Extension doesn't work. It's a great
idea, though...

Best price I found was at AllTech Electronics
<http://www.allelec.com/mac.htm> who list the Plaintalk Mic for $9, plus
about $8 for shipping and handling. I also picked up a cable and some
Phonenet adapters (the adapters were $3/each). I ordered last week and
haven't gotten it yet. I'll let you know if they don't come...

If you have a preamp on an old stereo component, that may work with the
mic you have. You need line-level rather than mic-level input.

Our school is experimenting using the new PowerPC RealAudio 3.0, 4.0, and

Subject: Problems with Value Fax

It looks as if my earlier message didn't get through ,, here goes :

I recently downloaded a copy of Valuefax. My modem type is a Banksia
MyFastModem 28.8 V34. I've installed the Class 2 version of the software
as recommended. The instructions then say I need a command string to
put the modem in XON/XOFF flow control mode. The XON/XOFF string I'm
using is the default one: AT&F&K4

While I have been able to send faxes, I can't receive any - I've enabled
the background program that sets the modem on line, but it looks as
if the modem resets itself after connection but before any data can get
through to my modem.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Subject: speech recognition on mp2010 (my goof)

I had told this list awhile back of a technique of getting sound in
and out of a newton cheap so they could hold out and not buy a mp2000 to
await rumored speech recognition on mp2010.
I was, in particular, interested in the fact that speech
recognition could fascilitate controlling my ever developing newton
navigator with my hands off it driving in my car and know that recognition
involves definition of a language by grammers and I was interested in the
definition of a music language through the Bol processor on this bbs.
So, I thought I, of all people, should wait or perhaps hurry apple
to have it in mp2000 plugin by my post.
Since then, I have made some inquiries.
On a mac speech recognition, dragon powersecretary requires 24 mb
of system ram, 13 mb of application ram, 32 mb of ram installed for
multiple applications using it. Hard disk storage requires at least 25 mb
of disk for the first user's speech and 5 megs for each additional user.
Don't wait for the mp2010! It might not even get to exist if you
don't show your support now. The mp2000's may all be bought up.
Recognize newton, don't wait for it to recognize you. At any rate,
that is my opinion now.
	Sorry.
