Subject: [*] "Classical" Kaleidoscope Sounds

You can customize the look of your Mac with Kaleidescope...now you can
customize the sound, as well! The "Classical" sounds for Greg
Landweber's Kaleidescope is an applet that will automatically replace the
"window shade" sounds with new, symphonic strokes of a cello. The sounds
are short, but unique, and contain sounds for both the "close window" and
"open window" functions.

The "Classical" sounds for Kaleidescope can be downloaded here, or at
<HTTP://WWW.CLIXSOUNDS.COM>,
along with several other sets of sounds for Kaleidescope and other
Macintosh sounds.

This file is freeware and redistribution of the archive in its entirety
is welcome. Instructions are included with the file for proper
installation. Note that a portion of the file is a catalog containing
information about the Clixsounds CD-ROM.

Subject: [*] Althea 1.0 for Kaleidoscope

Althea is a color scheme for use with Kaleidoscope 1.0.1.

In creating this, I took the Aaron scheme and made a lot of changes. Of
course,
I've left a lot of things the same because I liked them that way. Basically,
if
you've used Aaron before (I'm sure you have) and you use this, you'll see the
difference. I've put a lot of work into this, and whether anyone thinks this
is
original or a hack, I believe it's original. The key interface features
(close,
grow, hide boxes, scoll buttons and arrows, etc.) are like nothing I've
seen yet
and I hope that I'm not the only one who thinks they're cool.

This is freeware. I ask nothing for it. If you really want to send me
something, I guess I can't stop you.

Note: This version 1.0 is my first working copy. It has yet to fullfill my
"vision" for this scheme. I had made my own check and cross boxes but
something
caused them to only show the bottom half. As a result, I took them out for now
and used Aaron's. I also had made small close, grow, and hide boxes for B&W
mode, but they caused all close, grow, hide boxes to only show half in all
depths. Other than that, I'm relatively happy with it but I'll working to
correct these problems.

"Althea" is the title to a song from the Grateful Dead's "Go To Heaven" album.
It's easy goin' and smooth - a good listen.

Subject: [*] Apple NeXTSTEP Splash Screen/System Patch

The startup screen file can be used with any color MacOS compatible Macintosh.

Use this patch on a COPY of the System file ONLY. Apple Orchard
Software is not responsible for damage to your computer (directly or
indirectly). Use at your own risk. If you are uncomfortable with using
the patch, then use the StartupScreen file instead.

What is the startup screen? It is a rendition of the Apple/NeXT
merger. Very colorful, and professional-looking (I -yipes!- stole the
graphics from the NeXT web site @ www.next.com).

I have included the ResEdit resources if you feel comfortable patching
the file yourself. To do this, simply open the file "NeXT Splash
1.5.RSRC" in ResEdit, copy all of the PICT resources , open a COPY of
the System file (or System Update x.x, depending on your System verison)
and paste (replacing existing ID numbers). Save, close, replace
original with newly patched copy (keeping original in a safe place for
now) and restart. Whew!

I am, in no way, the official owner of the designs/logos/graphics
enclosed. I am not placing a copyright on this software, as it is
already owned by Apple/NeXT. I am, however, placing a copyright on the
arrangement. This software is NOT in the public domain, the graphics
are owned by the mentioned companies.

You may distribute the software in modified or unmodified form freely.
Apple Orchard Software hereby disclaims ALL legal responsibilities for
the content of the graphics enclosed (for copyright and proprietary
reasons).

You may include this software on any and all CD-ROM collections so long
as the average price of each CD is no more than the price of MacOS 7.6
(just kidding).

Apple Orchard Software can be reached on the internet at cam@escape.ca.

Crossbow is a new color scheme for the popular Mac OS appearance
modifier, Kaleidoscope. Crossbow gives your Mac a kind of "retro
technical" look by simulating the wood and metal prevalent in the weapon
of the same name. Many of the current KAL schemes are high-tech looking

Subject: [*] Decoder 1.2, a fast, easy Base64 and UU decoder

This is a drag and drop program that will decode either Base64 (MIME) or
UU encoded messages. Just drop the files onto the application and it will
determine the correct encoding scheme and decode accordingly.

Requires: System 7, PowerPC or 68020 machine.

The highlights...

It can handle files of any size, yet still has low memory requirements.
It is faster that other similar programs.
File segments do not have to be concatenated prior to decoding.
Handles "imperfect" files better than any other UU or Base 64 decoder.
Handles multi-part files.
Automatically sets file type and creator upon decoding.
Can open decoded files automatically if desired.
Handles files that have been concatenated by a newsreader.

I am sure you will find the Decoder to be the easiest-to-use, fastest,
most robust UU and Base64 decoder available.

New for version 1.2
Some bug fixes, default file settings, easier file extension entry.

Subject: [*] Ergo (an abstract action game)

Ergo is a game which combines strategy, memory, and plain old
guesswork to create an interesting mental challenge. It takes place on a
square board covered with tiles (4x4, 6x6, or 8x8). When you start a game
these tiles are randomly scattered in several different colors. Your goal
is to make all of these tiles the same color by clicking on them to
change their color. This sounds easy, but there's a twist: when you click
on a tile to change its color, other tiles also change. A game of Ergo
can take anywhere from a minute to several hours to complete, depending
on the difficulty level. Ergo also uses other features such as "skips" to
change tiles without flipping others, and the ability to save boards by
setting the random seed for board generation.

Ergo is a shareware game. This means that you are allowed to try it
out as long as you like in its "crippled" version, but if you decide to
keep it you are expected to pay for it and register. Registering costs
just $15 (handled by Kagi), and entitles you to this version of Ergo and
all future releases. When you register, you recieve a license code that
disables the annoying message you see when starting Ergo, and enables the
more advanced difficulty levels.

For more information on Ergo visit the Ergo web site at
http://www.macconnect.com/~pleco/ergo.spml (SPML is an HTML-like format
that any browser should be able to read without trouble).

System requirements: Any Mac, preferably a 68030 or better (PowerPC is
fine, not native because the extra speed isn't needed but runs fine
emulated), with a 256-color display at 512x384 or more. Also needs system
6.0.5 or later (7.0 preferred but not required).

With any questions, comments or bug reports on Ergo please contact

Subject: [*] eudora-multiple-account v2.0 script

Eudora-macc (multiple account) AppleScript script, version 2.0
by Vlad Enache
last updated January 30, 1997

# What it is

This script automates the task of checking multiple e-mail accounts with
Eudora through a PPP connection. It can also randomize the quote at the end
of your Eudora signature.

If you don't use Eudora, you don't need it. If you have only one e-mail
account, you might still want to use it, because it automates the whole
process of:
  - picking a quote randomly from a folder and appending it to your signature,
  - launching Eudora with the desired settings,
  - opening the PPP connection (using any PPP settings set defined in
"Configure PPP"),
  - sending any queued mail,
  - getting the mail from your POP account(s),
  - closing the PPP connection, and after that
  - telling Eudora to filter the received mail.

It uses the minimum amount of on-line time needed, thus saving you money.
It's also very handy to put an alias to it into the Startup Items folder,
so that your computer will automatically check your mail whenever switched
on. It can even connect and check your mail every x minutes, if you wish.

Subject: [*] File Kinder 1.0b1 - a type-changer in pure Applescript

This pair of scripts does what many other utilities do: it sets the creator
type
of text files. So why even bother?

They illustrate several scripting techniques I haven't seen used elsewhere,
that
may be useful if you want to explore AppleScript, and if you want to tinker
with
them it's easy - open with the Script Editor and tinker away.

Drop an application on the main script, and it will reset itself so that all
future drops (of anything but a single application) mark text files as
created by
that application; it will also, via the helper "wait for" script, make its own
icon match the resulting files.

It's fast enough to be fairly painless, it's public domain, it uses only
standard
scripting components (aka OSAXen) and if you script you might find something
useful. Lemme know if it breaks on you, I'll try to help fix it.

GifBuilder 0.5 is a program to create animated GIF files, which quickly
become a popular way to include short movies in Web pages. Its input is
an existing animated GIF, a bunch of PICT, GIF, TIFF and/or Photoshop
files, or a QuickTime movie, Premiere FilmStrip, PICS file, or the layers
of a Photoshop file; and its output is a GIF89a file with multiple images.
Transitions and filtering can be applied to the frames. Animations can be
previewed. Comprehensive scripting support. Fat binary.

Main changes since 0.4.1: transitions, dynamic and static filters,
animation cropping, frame icons in the Frames window, many user interface
improvements and bug fixes, tutorial.

GifBuilder 0.5 is freeware (see the readme file for the details).
A French version is available as GifBuilder 0.5 F.

browsers currently support them. Also included is a listing of the HTML
codes for Non-Standard Characters, Development tips, and HTML
Troubleshooting techniques. The guide is simple to use, thorough, fast,
and allows the user to quickly search for a specific tag simply by typing
in its name. The correct syntax for each tag and attribute is given in a
clear, concise way that makes for a fast checking of tag usages. All tags,
even those specific to particular browsers, are given. QuickTags Lite can
be used with virtually all HTML and Text editing applications, as well as

- When the clipboard window was sent to the background a slight flicker occu=
red.
- The progress bar showing while decoding a BinHex coded message did not=
 fill as
smooth as indented. It now uses a color pattern when available.
- Added a progress bar while encoding BinHex. It will show for each outbound
'.txt' file made.
- While reading the mail file it was not locked, which is needed to prevent
NET/Mac from updating it, resulting in that message being returned to the
  sender.
- Found another bug in the 'alias' scanning code. Do not type a space in the
  middle of an address.

Subject: [*] Insomniac 1.1.1 for PowerBooks and PCI Power Macs

Note: This utility works only on those Macintosh models that can wake
themselves up (PowerBook 100 & 150, PowerBook 500 and 5300 series,
PowerBook Duos, and PCI-based Power Macintoshes).

Some PowerBooks have the ability to wake themselves up. This is very
convenient, for automatically sending faxes or email in the middle of the
night.

However, the "PowerBook" or "Energy Saver" Control Panel provided by Apple
only allows you to enter a single wakeup time. This prevents you from
scheduling multiple wake-up sessions. For example, if you wanted to send
your faxes at 1:00am, and then download some files at 2:00am, you'd have to
stay up until 1:00am, and reset the wakeup timer manually.

Insomniac allows you to program up to fifty wakeup "events" (registered
copies only). Therefore, you can have your PowerBook wake up several times
during the night, or even program it to wake up once a night for weeks on
end.

Changes in version 1.1.1:

     - Updated manual with compatibility information.
     - Properly identifies Macintosh model.
     - Added core AppleEvent support.
     - Added code to gracefully exit PPC application on 68K Mac.

My shareware utilities can now be registered through the Kagi shareware
system.

Shareware; $10 registration fee suggested. Unregistered copies allow you
to enter up to two wake-up events.

Knot lets you create large 3-D color animations and stills of
beautiful abstract knots. You design the knot's form, colors, motion,
backgrounds and lighting - or design and render entire animations
automatically. It's an endless source of gorgeous moving backgrounds and
photocollage elements for your work.

* Easy to use: knots will design themselves if you want, or you can
  exert fine control
* Renders standard TIFFs, QuickTime movies, QTVR objects, & icons
* Fast background rendering yields still pictures in a few minutes
* Create 3D stereograms, movies, and tiles with one click
* Beautiful graphic interface

Knots are 3-D abstract shapes which many people say look "something
like intestines", but MacFormat magazine says "Design fantastic,
beautiful images on your Mac with this easy to use graphics program.
With a wealth of options to stretch your artistic talent, the program
produces its wonderful creations in just minutes."

Version 3.7.1 is a maintenance release which fixes bugs that could
cause crashes when rendering high-rez images. It still offers
compositing masks for digital video, improved motion control, and
seamlessly repeating tiles, all with high resolution and "ribbons,"
assorted lighting effects, 3-D, and tons of examples. Multiple colored
light sources illuminate curved, segmented, glowing, buckled,
iridescent, wet, and segmented strands, with animated previews, all in
24-bit poster-size color.

Knot requires a color Macintosh with System 7 or later. You can use
your creations with any paint program or movie player.

This is a update {Feb 1, 1997} to Mike Gleason and Bruce Grubb's Mac FTP
list. It lists over 200 mac anonymous ftp sites (some with notes), over
75 Mac web pages, contains some instructions on how to use anonymous
ftp and find files as well a format chart showing which programs
decompress and decode which files and a section on how to use certain
decoded files. This archive contains both the text and html versions.

Please note that the html part is actually four crosslinked files:
mac-ftp-list.html, ftp-list.html, www-section.html, and site-notes.html
that require HTML Browser such as Lynx, Mosaic or NetScape to view.

Must be in a monospaced font to be readable; Courier 10pt is recommended,
though Monaco 9pt or a PC equivalent can be used instead. Needs StuffIt

KEYWORDS: VIRUS MERRYXMAS VACCINE XMAS PICKLE ANTIBODY INOCULATE

This stack eliminates script based viruses which spread themselves by
appending the scripts of other stacks with additional instructions which
in turn infects every stack they come in contact with. The original virus
of this ilk is called "merryxmas."

Since the appearance of merryxmas, other strains have surfaced such as
merry2xmas, Lopez and others too crude to mention. merryxmas Vaccine
catches them all-and it's FREE!

NEW in v3.2
 ---------
A well meaning merryxmas "antibody" has appeared. Unfortunately, while it
may have good intentions, it is by definition a virus itself. It doesn't
do any harm, but it does quietly insert itself into the Home stack and
others in much the same way merryxmas does. Version 3.2 removes the
antibody.

Requirements
 -----------
HyperCard v2.1 or later.
Color monitors (optional) will display "status colors."

Subject: [*] MooVer 1.42

esp Software releases MooVer 1.42, shareware QuickTime movie builder

ENCINITAS, Calif. USA --Feb. 2, 1997-- esp Software has just announced
the release of version 1.42 of their Macintosh QuickTime movie-building
utility software, MooVer, now in both English and German languages.
MooVer was awarded 5 mice on MacUser's Software Central site
<http://www.hotfiles.com/swbrowse/MC10/4/0/mac-MC10404.html>! MooVer is
a $10 USA shareware Macintosh utility that creates a QuickTime movie from
a sequence of image and sound files dropped onto it. It is perfect for
creating computer animations, slide shows, or batch-converting images or
sounds into QuickTime movie format. MooVer's goal is to let you create
QuickTime movies quickly and easily. It is not intended to be a large
full-featured movie editing program, but is instead a simple, solid
movie builder.

MooVer works on any 68020 or better Macintosh, and is accelerated for the
Power Macintosh, and requires MacOS 7.1 or newer, and QuickTime 1.6 or
newer.

MooVer can read the following kinds of files as input: Macintosh Pict
files, PICS animation files, and System 7 sound files. MooVer will
combine and compress all of the the image and sound files into a single
QuickTime movie file, which can then be played back on any
Macintosh-compatible or "Wintel"-compatible computer using QuickTime and
a movie-player application. MooVer has some additional features that make
it useful for special purpose projects:
+ A folder full of image files can be dropped onto MooVer for large-scale
batch processing.
+ It has a "Quiet Mode" where it will use previously chosen settings for
any new movies, without prompting for settings each time.
+ It can be driven by simple AppleScript commands for automated movie
making.
+ It can add each file name or user-defined strings as subtitles under
each frame.
+ Movies can be saved in Mac OS-QuickTime or cross-platform-QuickTime
(flattened) format.

MooVer is fully functional shareware, so all of its features are enabled
for you to try. It costs $10 USA for a single user, for individual or
commercial use. Discounts for school use, and discounts for multi-user
and site license packs are now available, and you can now easily register
via the Kagi shareware company or via CompuServe.

*** As the author, I give permission for this to be included on the
CD-ROM.

versions since 7.0.

And you will need at least 7.0 to make use of these froopy little desktop

So, you got these 19 patterns, and the icons say they are text clippings.
Fine.

Now you need to go to the Control Panels folder, open up the Desktop
Patterns control panel, and then drag each of these little suckers onto the
desktop pattern contol panel pattern window.

That's it.

Easy.

Do each one individually...the Desktop Pattern Control Panel doesn't like
it when you select all and then drag the whole heap over at once.

Go figure.

Have fun and enjoy...share 'em with your friends!

Oh yes...these are totally free...although I would REALLY appreciate it if

Hithere Mac gang.

Attached are some PPATs of the startup sequence of the X Files. I found
them on an Amiga magazine coverdisk, they were about the only item worth
salvaging. I tidied them up a bit and made them presentable for the Mac
OS so all you who know "The truth is out there", can now proclaim it from
your desktop. And why not?

There are three seperate items: A rsrc file, a Texture Installer file and
a folder containing clippings. That covers most options I guess. Also a
small read me file which is merely a copy of this.

The patterns cost nothing, put them on your CDROMs, BBS, archives etc. Do
what thou wilt. I would appreciate email though just to see how far
they've gone. I've had mail from all over the globe with the exception of
the Polar regions.

I don't see how there can be a copyright problem with the images. You can
video the show so I guess desktop patterns must be ok. I am merely the
messenger, honest guv.

Enjoy them,
