Subject: [*] Jons Commands 1.8.1

Here is a new version of Jon's Commands. This brings me to 1.8.1 with a
number of bug fixes.

Jon's Commands is an AppleScript scripting addition which adds a number of
commands to the AppleScript language. Complete documentation is included in
the package, along with an Apple Guide which works in your script editor.

To be precise, here are the bugs I fixed in this version:

Made "machine environment" recognize PowerBook keyboards and 603e, 603ev
and 604e processors.

Fixed missing watch cursor from animated cursor in "set cursor to" command.

Changed a bunch of the ids for resources just in case since they might
conflict with application resources when embedding osaxen. Now they're all
in wackier ranges. This could affect scripts! This could affect the "set
cursor to" command in your scripts iff you refer to cursor lists by number
instead of by name.

Made "play sound" recognize alias files.

Shortened the copyFile temp file name so that it couldn't get too long &
recompiled with MoreFiles 1.4.3.

Jon's Commands and the rest of my software is also available on my web page:

Have fun!

MATH DITTOS 2: Fact Controlled SUBTRACTION for Special Learners is a group o=
f
ClarisWorks documents designed to allow students to compute while learning t=
heir
facts. The fact bars, strips, etc. included on each page include all and
only the
facts used on the page. The worksheets are designed to be as uncluttered as
possible, with large numbers and very few problems on each page. All facts
presented in a factstrip or factbar are tested at least once on the page.
Emphasis is usually given to the newest facts. No other facts should be on t=
he
page The "zero minus zero" fact is assumed, and if necessary, should be
directly taught.

MD2:FCSfSpL is unique in that it is published as a series of computer docume=
nts,
and in that it supplies comprehensive fact support. This feature allows
students
who have not, or can not, master their facts to continue learning the=
 process of
subtraction.

NEW in version 1.3:
* There are now separate versions for the ClarisWorks 2.1/3.0 file format
and the
newer ClarisWorks 4.0 format. This solves some problems with graphics and
columns
that the Claris file converters (excellent tools, by the way) couldn't quite
handle.
* Only basic Macintosh TrueType fonts are used--Times, Geneva, and Helvetica=
.
* Fact support now on ALL pages. Word Problem page facts correspond to their
worksheet counterpart.
* New, more attractive and less distracting header graphics.
* Flashcards that complement the program are included in the registered
versions only.
* A few technical corrections have been made, including correcting a few
inaccuracies in the answer sheets (ouch-hate that), rephrasing of some word
problems, and better grouping on problems.

Subject: [*] MultiTimer 2.1.1

MultiTimer is a utility for keeping track of the time you spend on any
projects, tasks, jobs or pastimes you perform with your Mac. It will be of
particular interest to those who do freelance work for an hourly rate, but
will also be useful for such things as tracking the time you spend on a
commercial online service, or any number of other things.

The emphasis in MultiTimer is on ease of use. Each project (or whatever) you
want to keep track of is represented by a "module" in MultiTimer. Setting up
a new module requires simply making one menu selection and typing a name for
the module. Tracking the accumulated time spent on a project is accomplished
by clicking a start/stop timer button. A pop-up menu shows you a module's
total time for a session, day, week, month, year or a grand total. MultiTimer
can optionally keep a "Log file" with a permanent record of all sessions that
you time. Data from Log files can be viewed in a variety of formats, and can
be pasted into other applications such as spreadsheets or databases. A number
of other features are available, but everything is designed to be easy and
intuitive. With MultiTimer you have all the features you need in a
time-tracking utility, coupled with unparalleled ease of use. Full
instructions are available within the program.

This is version 2.1.1 of MultiTimer. This version includes some small fixes
and enhancements over 2.1 and institutes the use of the Kagi shareware
payment system. Version 2.1 introduced a very cool "floating window" optional
feature, and fixed a bug that caused crashes on Macs whose monitors were set
to 16 grays or 16 colors.

Critical Acclaim:
"MultiTimer is an ideal program for people who need to keep track of how much
time they spend on projects that are billed. ...very easy to understand. Four
'Mice'"!
-------- Dan Miller in the MacUser Software Central Web Site.

Requires System 7.0 or later; 7.1 or later recommended.

Introduction

The Iranian daily newspaper Hamshahri is made available on the World Wide
Web by Neda Rayaneh at:

http://www.neda.net/hamshahri.

The newspaper is set in a freeware custom TrueType font called "Persian".
This Nisus Writer macro converts Persian text laid out in this font to the
standard format used by Nisus Writer and other Persian-capable Macintosh
applications.

This macro will also convert Persian web files in the shareware "NetNative"
webfont, which has the same character mapping as the "Persian" font
distributed by Hamshahri. For more information about this font, go to:

http://www.payvand.com/persian/

Known Problems

Roman text mixed with the Persian text will appear to be reversed. You can
resolve this by selecting the Roman text and applying the Reverse format to
it.

Converted text will have a hard return at the end of each line. If you want
to remove these line breaks, select a block text from which you wish to
remove them and run the Form Paragraph macro that comes with Nisus Writer.

The "narrow space" is not used. Regular spaces are used throughout.

This macro is free, and may be freely distributed, but not sold for profit.

Smart Scroll enhances regular scroll bars so they

The thumb indicator in scroll bars becomes PROPORTIONAL:
If a window is displaying half of a document, the
indicator will be half the scrollbar size.

This lets you know at a glance how much of the document

Smart Scroll also adds ACTIVE SCROLLING which scrolls the contents of the
window while you drag the scroll tab. Just release the tab when you see
the part of the document you want: no more guessing where you'll end up!

Here is the latest version of Star Gate, which corrects a few minor bugs.

Star Gate is a utility that allows easy transfer of files between Mac and
PC, or PC and PC, via a serial link. If you need to transfer files between
computers and don't want to bear the expense of network cards, transceivers
and commercial network software then you need Star Gate.

Star Gate is easy to configure and requires only a cheap null-modem cable.
It can transfer whole directory trees and reconstruct the tree on the
receiving computer. It also performs text translation so the line endings
of text files are always correct for the receiving computer. The interface
is simple and convenient. To send a file to another computer simply drag it
to the outgoing directory and it will automatically appear in the incoming
folder of the other computer. Forget about protocols, packets, CRCs etc.
just drag your files!

The software is shareware.

   Hi Josmar,

There's a few things that could be wrong bit first some (unsolicited)
information: although your IIci (and mine! ;-) does have
software-controlled power it lacks a bit of hardware called 'Egret' (don't
ask me why) which enables new Macs to turn themselves On as well as Off (as
set with the "Auto power on/off" or "Energy Saver" control panels). That's
why these two control panels don't get installed, and that's why they don't
work. So that's not the problem.

The simplest solution is that it could be the power switch. Mind you, I
said switch, so that's not the power key on your keyboard. Look at the back
of your IIci, you'll see a round switch with a slit in it, on the left
below the power-connectors. This switch can be 'locked' (with a
screwdriver; that's what the slit is for) by pressing and turning. That way
the power switch is always 'on' and your mac will behave like you
described. So check if that switch is locked in the 'on' position.

If that's not the case it might be your keyboard, mouse or ADB cables that
are making short circuit somewhere. Borrow a keyboard you can trust and see
if the problem goes away.

If it's neither the powerswitch nor anything on the ADB ports it must be
(as far as I can tell) a hardware error on the inside of your Mac. But I
doubt that.

    Good luck!

This reminds me of a state my [System 7.1] IIci gets into, which I take to
be a software problem: on the Shutdown command, the Finder restarts, but no
shutdown actually occurs. Typically after an application has unexpectedly
quit [Netscape Navigator 2.01] or perhaps after using other memory-hungy
apps [QuarkXpress and Adobe Photoshop] ...if I continue working, ignoring
the feeling I should Restart, or after a partial restart, a bomb is likely
to occur. Now I restart twice, though I'm not sure it's ever cleared up
that way, then power off by reaching around to the slotted button on the
back [wishing I had a programmer's switch-- my next purchase will be new or
reconditioned, and I expect all the pieces to be there!]. Neither Disk
First Aid nor Norton Utilities 2.0 finds anything wrong.

If the original poster actually achieves a shutdown, with the screen going
dark for an observable number of seconds, I'm not talking about the same
thing.

I had a very similar problem less than 2 weeks ago. I was playing around
with "Dark Side of the Mac". This shareware must use a software lock on
the HD when you enable the "Password on wake" option in this screen saver.
My drive was so bad that it wouldn't even mount when booting off another
drive. I got the drive to mount using Norton Disk Doctor (v. 3.2.1 of
course). Now here's the trick:

You need a HD big enough to hold all of the files on the locked drive.
Then, after booting from a CD or Zip disk, drag the drive icon of the
locked drive onto the drive icon of the spare drive. This will copy
_everything_ on the internal, including invisible files, and the desktop
folder (all files on the desktop).

It worked for me. Good luck.

Check your Extensions folder; look for the following:

If either or both of them are missing, your system will not recognize audio

doesn't seem to be very good documentation in CodeWarrior.

Is there anyone who knows of a package that is both clear and
concise about specific Macintosh functions specifically for use
with CodeWarrior (by Mac specific, I am refering to functions
for color, fonts, GUI etc..) that will list the function and
possibly help me out with the usage of the function as well
as the reason why the function does what it does (eg: what
a specific reference or pointer refers to, or exact prototype)?

Most of the docs I've looked at seem targeted towards people
who are new to programming altogether, and the docs that appear
as if they are the ones that are supposed to help with MacOS
specific functions do not appear to describe any of the functions
in detail .. can anyone help me?

NOTE: Please, if you have an answer - reply directly to me if
you can because I am currently unable to recieve a very fast

For the last few days my PowerMac 8500 doesn't want to power it off too

May that be linked to the recent upgrade from MacOS 7.5.3rev2 to 7.5.5
or is this some kind of bug depending on the date (a new year's virus ?)

somebody posted a message relating the same problem on another mail-list

Subject: Needed: Intelligent e-mail storage/sorting

Greetings!

With my wife and I getting an average of 200 mails per week, of which
many require several follow-ups, I am looking for an intelligent e-mail
storage and retrieval system.
We are using Netscape's mail system, because it's simple to use, but -
as you all know - it does not allow folders within folders in
the mailbox section, nor does it let us rename the subject headers, on
which the internal sorting depends.

Yes, I have looked at Eudora Lite, but haven't found a way to import my
existing mail files, which are far too voluminous and important to
discard.

I have also tried ETD, which allows inputting into Filemaker, but then,
of course, the links are dead, and moreover, it does not seem to allow
for an incremental update, i.e. it reimports even those files, which are
already in the database.

Ideally, the utility would allow:
1) drag and drop from NS
2) renaming subject headers for better organization
3) folders within folders
4) some interactivity as far as *re:mail* is concerned, which, I guess,
would go hand in hand with active URLs and addresses..

I have tried to locate such a utility in InfoMac, but haven't come
across one that would do this.
Does anyone know of such an animal?

Now, if there IS a way to get my mail folders into Eudora, that would be
a second choice.

Subject: OT for the rest of the World! (Q)

Does anyone have an idea when OT 1.1.1 will be available for non-US
locations, in particular the UK. It is becoming increasingly frustrating to
see new software which stipulate OT 1.1.1

I run a web WebStar and ListStar and am desperate to move over to OT.

Can UK users use the US version safely??

This issue of software being delayed for non-US versions of software is
disconcerting. I have purchased several different Macs, including
PowerBooks, and I was an early adopter of OT. It has been a nightmare in
the last two years knowing that bugs in my software were responsible for
regular crashes, and seeing US upgrades available, but having to wait
months for UK versions. I have had particular problems with a PB5300c
(disaster area) and 8500/120 (problems with severe crashes until OT 1.0.8
came out), need I say more.......

Come on Apple, get moving, there is life outside of California.......

There's a company advertised in MacWorld called "Kiwi Computers" that will
do a logic-board swap from a 630 to a 6300 for $499. This is the best
solution I have found anywhere for the upgrade of a 630.

Subject: Solution to Our Performa Difficulty

I promised to give you readers some feedback if and when our
problem 6300 Performa that kept freezing and crashing was rectified.

Fortunately, Kodak with whom Apple has a contract to repair Performas,
told me I could mail the CPU in to them. I did and they replaced the
main board. Everything works fine now and my wife is pleased.

The reason for the long delay was that even though our name
was on their list, Performas belonging to schools and businesses have
priority over individuals.

Thanks to all of you who responded to my plea and offered helpful
suggestions.

Subject: Trying to create a two-byte Japanese kana font

I've been trying to use Fontographer to develop a variant of a Japanese
kana font to be used in a Japanese system environment, but have been having
trouble with the mapping. My original intent was to open an existing
two-byte font, modify the character forms and save as my new font (avoiding
the need for me to do any mapping at all). Unfortunately, I have nowhere
near the memory required to open one of the complete kana-plus-kanji fonts
(such as the Japanese Language Kit's Honmincho), and my attempts to assign
the appropriate unicode (from Apple's mapping tables) to each character in
a font built from scratch have resulted in fonts that produce nothing but
little square boxes in place of the familiar kana I had hoped to see.

Does anyone have a two-byte Japanese kana font that is kana only and works
in a Japanese system environment like KanjiTalk or the JLK (and is
therefore small enough for me to open and modify)? Or alternately, is
anyone willing to walk me through the proper assignment of unicode to
characters in a made-from-scratch font? The former would probably be easier
on us both, but I'd be very appreciative of any assistance or advice.

Responses to hart@valley.or.jp will be summarized for the list. Thanks for
your help.

Subject: Zaurus/Mac Connectivity

Some time ago I replaced my old YO-series Sharp Organizer with a Zaurus
5000 because the software which I had been using to backup and manipulate
my Organizer data on my SE30 no longer worked properly on my new
PowerWave 120 (or, so I was told, on ANY PCI power mac).

The free backup software which came with purchase of the Zaurus does
provide backup function, but doesn't allow any manipulation of the data
on the desktop from the backup file.

Rupp, the maker of virtually all the software and other accessories for
the Zaurus series, has told me that they don't have anything which
provides this flexibility for the Mac (although they have several
programs like this for Windows, etc).

Does anyone know of ANYTHING which will do this? From whatever source?

Frankly, the lack of what seems to be a pretty basic support for the Mac
by Sharp and Rupp is making me think that I should abandon the Zaurus
entirely in favor of something like US Robotics Pilot, or the Psion.

Replies can go either here or to <scrivelo@tiac.net>.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
