"Tony Stanton" <cobblers@bigfoot.com> asks:

>I've heard that it is possible to install a G3 or G4 motherboard in a
older
>Mac, like our 7200 and 7300s. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I
>would go about this, and whether it is practical to attempt such a thing.

Tony:
The 7500, 7600, 7300, 8500, 9500 and their server versions had their
processors on a daughter-card that plugged into the motherboard. They can
be exchanged for another card. The 7200 had its processor directly on the
motherboard. The whole motherboard would have to be upgraded or perhaps
someone (Sonnet Technologies, Newer Technologies?) makes a processor
upgrade that plugs into a PCI slot and bypasses the original 601 processor.
I upgraded my 7600/132 to be a 7600/G3-318 with a Powerlogix G3 card. That
quadrupled my speed according to MacBench. In practical terms I really have
seen a 4 times increase in processor intensive tasks like encoding MP3s or
running Photoshop filters.
The price was right (almost a year ago) and are even lower now. I recommend
it.

Subject: (Q) QuicKeys 5.0 any more stable?

Dear Digest readers,
QuicKeys was supposed to be able to linked to GT Interactive's
VoicePowerPro's command structure, but I never figured out how to
make it do so, and I wonder if 5.0 makes it any easier.

In QuicKeys 4.1 I found my toolbar icons would vanish, and sometimes
I would crash trying to activate one of the icons on the toolbar,
with a Type 1 error.

Also QuicKeys doesn't appear to automatically search for updated
applications except on reboot, I wonder if I can make it do that at
anytime.

Icons of applications I updated will disappear from the toolbars, and
I have to remake the macro, and then put it in the toolbar if I want
it in the toolbar again.

The toolbars can only stretch one column or one row, meaning that
they can overflow with icons, and have to stretch off screen at
times. This is especially a problem if you setup the toolbars as
click and go style, and then are forced to switch when you want to
add new items. If they had a way to scroll icons on the toolbar
when they went off screen that would be great.

Another thing I'd like to see is balloons that would appear over
toolbar icons stating what macro keystroke is necessary to launch the
QuicKey represented by the icon.

Is it any more stable on MacOS 9.0.4 than QuicKeys 4.1 on an ADB
based Powerbook G3?

Does 5.0 address all these changes?

Thank you.

Sincerely,
abrody@smart.net

Subject: [*] Tex-Edit Plus 4.0J - Japanese Version

This is the Japanese version of the Tex-Edit Plus package.

Tex-Edit Plus is a scriptable, styled text editor that fills the gap
between Apple's bare-bones SimpleText and a full-featured word
processor. It's fast, efficient, and has a clean, uncluttered interface.
It's also great for cleaning up text which is transmitted over the
Internet.

Tex-Edit Plus features: PowerPC native (fat), extensive munging
abilities, unlimited file size, Drag&Drop support, AppleScript support,
Word Services support, Speech Manager support, picture handling, sound
handling, movie handling, ability to create SimpleText Read-Only
documents, and much more. System 7.0 or better required.

NEW -- Tex-Edit Plus 4.0 represents a major upgrade, including many new
features--all scriptable, of course! (This version requires MacOS 7.1 or
newer.)

Tex-Edit Plus supports unlimited undo and redo. A new "strikethrough"
text style is supported. Flexible superscripting and subscripting are
supported (in one point increments). "Text hiliting" is supported,
allowing hiliter-like emphasis of any text.

Tex-Edit Plus can read and write UTF-16 (unicode) text. The new file
format is fully backward compatible with previous versions.

Each paragraph can be formatted individually. These new paragraph
settings include text justification (left, center, right, full), space
above, space below, left indent, right indent, first line indent (or
hanging outdent), and bottom border (in one of several line styles).
Each paragraph can also have its own line spacing (in one point
increments) and dominant text direction (useful for right-to-left
scripts).

Triple click now selects a paragraph (instead of a line) and quadruple
click now selects all the text (instead of a paragraph).

New preference options have been added to select default text color, to
select default window background color, and to disable automatic
keyboard/font synchronization (for non-Roman fonts).

Pictures are now correctly centered when opening SimpleText read-only
documents. "Translucent drag and drop" is supported. A confirmation
alert appears when resetting all preferences. See the
Revision History for a list of all the other improvements and fixes

Subject: AppleCare Renewal

I had not seen or heard this before. Today I tried to renew my AppleCare
Service Plan on my PowerBook 3400. It seems that last October Apple
decided that non-G3 PowerBook AppleCare certificates will no longer be
renewed or that for all units AppleCare will only be available for 2 years
after the original warantee. I got both statements while on the phone
trying to get it renewed.

I find it amazing that AppleCare is not available after 3 years. For
example, my PB 170 just had its first 2 failures this year. The top case
locks broke so the display hangs quite loose. That would not have been
covered by AppleCare anyway since its plastic parts. The mouse no longer
functions and that would have been covered. Makes you wonder if the Apple
quality going down so they have to drop support early? I have complained
to Customer Relations but have no idea if anyone is really listening.

Subject: Can't start under 9.0.4? Replace Enabler!

System: iMac DV SE, Mac OS 9.0.4

I had a strange Finder crash (The Finder has unexpectedly quit). On
restart, it would freeze early in the startup process, even with
extensions off. I had difficulty getting it to start with an emergency
CD. Disk Warrior and Disk First Aid said no problems, but still no
startup. Tech Tool 2.5.4 then reported a damaged enabler.

Mercifully, I had a copy of the 9.0.4 update and used TomeViewer to
extract a fresh copy of PowerPC Enabler 9.0.4. Bingo! Perfect restart.

Just passing this on for what it's worth. Hope this helps someone. Cheers,

Is it worth it? Absolutely!
I have a PowerComputing PowerBase 200 that started out as a 603 and I added
a PowerLogix G3 750 board and clocked it at 300mHz. It's a "screamer" now
compared to its original form. It is a very simple procedure; instructions
are included and you won't be sorry when you restart after the
upgrade--Fasten your seat belt!

Getting ready to take the plunge & order a G4. Any opinions on the
DVD ROM or RAM drives Apple is offering?

Better to get an external?

Do they have an independent digital audio output or does it go
through the computer for analogue output only?

Thanks!

Subject: Lowering Startup Chime Sound

One of my long standing problems is to keep alert sounds loud enough while
keeping the Startup Chime liveable. If I keep the volume of the alert sounds
audible enough, the startup Chime blasts the speakers. In the Monitor &
Sounds CP, I've increased the alert sounds volume to the max and have the
system sounds about one half volume. Is there anyway to lower the chime in
ROM and keep the alert sounds reasonably loud?

Subject: pilot/mac grading

hi all,

i am about to make the dive into palm computing. one of the things i would
like to do with the palm is my classroom record keeping - grades and
attendance. for this to work, it needs to synch with a mac database. and
of course, if it also synched with a windows maching that would be nice
too.

is anybody doing this with relatively straight forward software? (cheap
too)?

i certainly could write a system to do this all using filemaker and jfile
and fmsynch - but that has a few disadvantages:
1.using filemaker! (panorama is much better)
2.writing the grading system from scratch - i could do this, but i'd
rather not
3.all this while dealing with the constraints of the data input system
that i am not very familiar with - it seems that somehow i will have to
"flatten" the input on the pilot and then relationalize it on the mac.

this last one - especially as i am really in the dark about the pilots
abilities (and jfile) has got me particularly worried.

any thoughts?

Since you mention rebuilding the PRAM, I assume that it is the computer you
are turning off and immediately back on. I found the same problem with a
Performa recently. The battery was dead, so startup did not occur properly,
leaving the monitor blank. But, when turning off the machine and immediately
turning it back on, there seems to have been sufficient charge stored in the
circuit do make a proper startup. The owner continued using that process
until he could buy a new battery.

Subject: What about the Coldstone Game Engine?

Hi everyone.

It's been a long time since the last version of the
Coldstone Game Engine has been posted. It's because we decided not to
release any more version of the Coldstone Game Engine until the final
release so we could focus on the final delivery. The product is almost
finished now. We are working on the final user manual as well as a
complete step-by-step tutorial to create your first complete Macintosh
game in one day! Some new cool addons and game editing tools made by
Beenox will also be included in the final package. All these tools will
also be available as stand-alone freeware applications from the Beenox
web site. A cool new Macintosh role-playing game (made with the
Coldstone Game Engine) should also ship at the same time featuring
breath taking 3D rendered graphics and high quality music.

Also expect some great surprises for all Mac gamers out there with the
final release...

The full release notes of the Coldstone Game Engine since the last beta
release are miles long and they will be posted to the web site next
week.

We receive emails each days asking about the windows version of
Coldstone. It will come. However, we will not work on it before the
final release of the Macintosh version. We will focus on porting the
engine first to give the possibility to Macintosh user to compile their
games on both platforms.

Things are going well and we feel confident that we will be able to
deliver the final version to your door by the end of this summer.
Macintosh gaming shall rules.

================================
For those of you that don't know what is the Coldstone Game Engine, it's
the most complete solution for anyone that want to develop games on the
Macintosh. This is the first development tool to give the user the
capability to create a stand-alone game which looks and execute the way
he wants. Nothing is beyond the user, he can design his own game
interface (windows appearance, menus, etc.), put his own graphics,
sounds and music in the game and much more. Stop wasting your
imagination on developing scenarios for other games, create your very
own with this professional game engine.
