With your help and the help of hundreds of thousands of other computer
users like you, we increase the odds of detecting signs of intelligent life
elsewhere in the universe.

SETI@home actually runs in two ways: The ÒapplicationÓ and the
ÒscreensaverÓ. It can do its work in either of these modes: it downloads
blocks of data from through the Internet, performs the number crunching on
that data (looking for orderly patterns that might originate in outer
space), returns the results, and gets another block of data. The
application is represented by a green radio telescope icon in the Menu Bar
(normally at the upper right of your screen). You can open the application
window by selecting Launch from this icon.

The screensaver program runs when you havenÕt used your keyboard or mouse
for a while. It displays color pictures showing the data analysis process.
Normally the application processes data only when the screensaver is
running. Optionally, you can have the application process data at any time
by launching the application.

"Recycle Spam" takes a multiple selection of messages, repackages them

including full header info, and semi-automate the process of entering

Subject: [*] Splash It 1.0

Splash It 1.0 is a splash screen shareware application for Macintosh
computers (PowerPC and 68k)
What does Splash It 1.0 do ?
Splash It 1.0 displays or plays a media splash screen (bitmap, pict
resource, QuickTime movie,
QuickTimeVR or System 7 sound), launches your application (it can be an
alias), waits for it to load
and then automatically quits.
Splash It 1.0 can also be set up in order to wait for the user to click
on your splash screen media
before to initiating the launch process of your application.
Splash It 1.0 main benefit is found when you have to launch a large
application, like a multimedia
game or presentation, which requires a long time to load.
Instead of having a frozen screen, Splash It 1.0 will display or play
your splash screen giving an
immediate feedback to the user.
Note: Splash It 1.0 automatically resizes itself to the size of the
bitmap image you have chosen,
however, QuickTime movies and QuickTimeVR need to be 320x240 pixel in
size. For System 7
sound, no Splash screen is display.
Splash It 1.0 can be set up to work in different ways.
You can set Splash It 1.0 to immediately launch your application after
the splash screen has
been displayed or, set a fixed amount of time before starting the launch
process. You can also
set it to wait for the user to click on your splash screen media (mouse
down event), set a
background color and hide the menu bar if required.
If you have an idea for new features or have found a bug, please e-mail me
at: jl@worldcom.ch .

StatistFunctions version 2.2 -------------------- This HyperCard stack
by Oscar van Vlijmen computes many statistical functions with high
accuracy. Combinatorial functions e.g.: draws, permutations (and
factorials even for large numbers!), variations, combinations.
Probability density functions e.g.: hypergeometric (Lucky 10, Lotto),
binomial (football toto), negative binomial, multinomial, Poisson,
normal. Cumulative distribution functions e.g.: standard normal and
inverse, binomial, negative binomial, negative exponential, Erlang,
gamma, beta, chi square, F, T, Cauchy, Rayleigh, error function. Just
for free I've thrown in an Erlang B/C traffic calculator. Can also be
used for very large traffic units and number of trunks. Many functions
are clearly explained, although this stack is not a course in
statistics. Emphasis is on statistical usefulness and accuracy, even for
big numbers, not on frills.

New in version 2.2: * Distributions added (Tukey-lambda, logistic,
cumulative hypergeometric, Von Mises). * Separate cards for some of the
used special functions (gamma, beta, incomplete gamma & beta, modified
Bessel functions). * More explanations for Erlang B&C. * Navigational
index card.

Freeware; not to be used for commercial applications; not on CD-ROM's.

**Check out MacUpdate's review of StuffCM at
http://www.macupdate.com/reviews/adam/stuffcm.html: "StuffCM is such a
sublime addition to the Mac OS, it's a wonder that it's not built in."

StuffCM is a contextual menu plugin that works with Aladdin Systems' StuffIt
Engine. It can stuff, unstuff, convert, BinHex, segment and join files
directly in the Finder through the contextual menu commands.

The StuffCM package also includes a control panel with lots of settings to
play with, plus the option to assign modifier keys to toggle those settings
on the fly. And it's 100% Appearance Manager savvy! Plus it supports
contextual menus - something many of Apple's own control panels don't!

Version 2.5 features the following changes:

*Compatible with StuffIt 5
*Now has registration codes. Previously registered users will be e-mailed
their codes.

Bugs fixed in version 2.5.2:

*Works again in Mac OS 8 and 8.1
*Certain registration codes were not being accepted
*The Stuff command is available for text files that the StufIt Engine
identifies as MIME files, such as saved e-mail messages

Switch-It 2.0 - Switch Applications via the Keyboard - Freeware

This control panel allows you to cycle through running applications by
Command-Tab. Releasing the Command key actually switches to the
application. Pressing the Escape key cancels the current switching
request while the Command key is still down.

While holding down the Command key, you can also press shortcut keys to
perform various tasks, such as marking selected applications to be
either quit or hidden/shown.

In addition to the "Hide-on-Request" feature, version 2.0 introduces an
alternate "Auto-Hide" key combination, Option-Tab by default, which
allows you to automatically hide the front application before switching
to the selected one.

You can easily customize the hot keys and many display options (font,
colors, view mode), as well as the application ordering (front to back,
alphabetical, launch order).

Requires Mac OS System 7.0 or later (System 7.5 or newer is
recommended).

AppleScript is the new feature of this version. With SwitchRes 2, you can
add scripts to display sets and let SwitchRes execute this script every
time an application is opened, or when you select the display set (with a
key shortcut, with the menus...)
On the other way, SwitchRes itself can now be scripted. You can tell your
computer to change the resolution of all your monitors, to save the icons,
to appy a display set, etc.
SwitchRes is even recordable: that means that if you press the "record"
button in the Script Editor, all resolution changes will be recorded in the
editor's window !

With this new version, you can also:

*Reposition the monitors within a Display Set

*Open the SwitchRes Control Panel with one key

*Redefine the order of the Display Sets in the menus

*Hide all applications automatically when launching a new app

*Save and restore the icons positions correctly when video mirroring is enabled

Some rare bugs have been fixed too:

*SwitchRes now remembers the video board you are using by its name, no more
by its driver number. With this change, SwitchRes will correclty recognize
a new video card

*A startup crash that could occur with QuicKeys is now corrected

*The 512x384 resolution is no more activated with the Setup Wizard on some
Macs that are likely to crash

*SwitchRes Contextual Menu now uses FinderPop 1.8 APIs if available. That
avoids adding my own System patches above FinderPop

and tons of other little things...

Subject: [*] Text Cleaner Lite 1.5

Why use Text Cleaner?
Text Cleaner was created with the design professional in mind, and is now a
valuable tool for Webmasters as well. Clients frequently supply design
studios with text that in most instances contains incorrect typographical
characters and other input errors, while Webmasters receive text from
designers that contains characters that need to be changed to their
simpler, HTML compatible counterparts. Traditionally, these items would
have to be changed one at a time using a layout or word processing
application. With Text Cleaner, conversions are done all at once and in as
many iterations as needed.

Text Cleaner will quickly Þnd typical entry errors and replace
inappropriate characters with correct ones, bringing your text up to
traditional typesetting or Web standards. Fi and ß ligatures, curly quotes,
ellipses, em and en dashes are set or removed. Multiple instances of
spaces, tabs and returns are eliminated in one fell swoop.

Without Text Cleaner, repeated Þnd-and-replace searches would be required.
For example, if there were four tabs together in a document, a
search-and-replace would change the Þrst two to one, then the next two to
one. The result would be another two tabs, but this wouldnÕt be found until
scanning through the entire document then starting again from the
beginning. Imagine how many searches would be required if there were a lot
of tabs together! Text Cleaner does all the repetitive work
for you.

Text Cleaner removes other famous blunder combinations tooÑlike spaces
around tabs, returns and dashes. Curly quotes can be set while retaining
inch and foot measurement markings and correct apostrophes for years like
Õ90 and 90Õs. Text from an email message that has returns after every line
can be converted to ÒwrappedÓ text and greater-than symbols used for email
quotations cleaned out instantly. These conversions are all performed in
the best possible sequence to avoid creating the same or worse conditions.

Subject: [*] Texture Magic 1.1

What it does

Create seamless textures from scratch.
TextureMagic offers plenty of effects and filters to create unique seamless
textures. You can influence them by changing meaningful no-nonsense
parameters to create truly amazing new textures. Unlike other texture
creators TextureMagic is a bitmap editor like Adobe Photoshop (tm) -- so
you apply filters and effects the way you already know.

Create seamless textures from photographed surfaces.
TextureMagic offers powerful tools to transform pictures into seamless
textures. Do you want (for example) a brick wall texture that looks
absolutely realistic? Just photograph a brick wall, load the picture into
TextureMagic and in minutes you have a seamless realistic tileable texture.

Edit textures in a bitmap editor that keeps the textures seamless.
TextureMagic is a bitmap editor, so you have all the tools you would
expect: Paintbrush, Rubber Stamp and all the other tools you already know.
This gives you complete control. The magic is that -- unlike editing in
Adobe Photoshopª -- TextureMagic always keeps your textures perfectly
seamless.

Subject: [*] The Computer Cookbook 2.5

This Cookbook layout came about as a result of my mom.
Everybody kept asking my mother for her recipes, but, of course,
they were scattered everywhere. My mother asked me if she could
enter them into her computer, thus allowing her to have them at
her disposal and not having to re-write them for everyone. Our
first attempt was in Microsoft (r) Word. That lasted about a month.
We bought MANY different layouts and programs. After entering
lots of recipes and hassling with trying to convert her recipe
measurements to decimals for the programs, we still could not find
ONE program or layout that did everything that she desired. She
would say, "Can you make this one do this? Can you make this one
do that? I like this, but I don't like that." Then I started learning
how to design layouts in Filemaker and then in FileMaker Pro.
With FileMaker Pro's ability to link scripts to buttons I had finally
found the solution. I would design a layout with her likes and
dislikes in mind, and thus The Computer Cookbookª was born.

Subject: [*] Trinity 1.0.2

Trinity is a simple game to learn and to play. Each player is given a
certain amount of triangles which make up his or her hand. Each point on a
triangle has a number on it. Match the numbers on one of your triangles up
with numbers on the triangles already on the board to score points. A well
chosen play may earn you additional bonus points for a 'special play.' You
may need to rotate a triangle to one of six orientations in order to play
it. The first player to play all of their triangles wins the round, and the
player with the most points after all rounds have been played is the winner!

A game of Trinity involves two to four players, human or computer. There
are 3 experience levels for computer players: novice, average, and veteran.
More experienced computer players will be able to sniff out special plays
(described below) better than less experienced players, as well as managing
their triangles wiser.

School Nurse is a FileMaker Pro template designed to help school nurses
track student health data. It was designed with the input and assistance

of a school nurse to meet specific needs. It handles tracking of contact

information, thirteen different types of immunizations, medical history,

allergies, medications, injuries, hospitalizations, chronic health
conditions, and recent illnesses. You can track testing of hearing,
vision, physical exams, scoliosis screening, oral exams, and blood
pressure throughout the educational history of the child. Users with
access to a digital camera or scanner can easily add a photograph of the

child to the record which can be an important aid in finding missing
children, as well as putting a face on the data. Most important, it's
easy to use. School Nurse was designed with a similar appearance to the
paper folders and forms currently used in public schools. Version 1.2
adds report printing and changes in immunization formatting, and fixes a
password bug in v1.1.

Subject: [*] WEBFormation

What's in a Bookmark Manager

The basic way to store an URL is as a browser bookmark. This gives you a
single list containing the URL and its name, but no additional information.
You can comfortably store up to 20 URLs this way, though you probably will
remember each of them after a while.

Another way of storing URLs are hierarchical Bookmark Managers. For
instance with the Favorites Menu of System 8.5 you can at least group some
URLs together. More sophisticated tools offer more information for an URL
like date of last visit, a comment or a rating. 200 - 300 URLs can be
stored, before you lose track of them.

The third type of Bookmark Manager is the linear list. Those do not
necessarily contain more information than the hierarchical list, but
sorting URLs by different fields is an added bonus. Around 500 URLs is the
maximum for the linear list, before things start getting messy.

And that is all?

In the last few years we have seen the development from handcoding html to
sophisticated WYSIWYG tools like Dreamweaver and GoLive. Bookmark Managers,
however, have seen no development at all.

I see the following two areas, in which a Bookmark Manager needs to be
improved (meaning, what WEBformation offers):

More information for a single URL

Very important is the possibility to store more text than a simple sentence
as a comment. Then there are: date, when URL was entered; has URL been
visited yet; date of last visit; number of visits; when do you want to
visit again; frequency of planned visits; was URL downloaded; levels of
download; validation; date of validation and so on.

Data management tools

In a linear list you can sort the URLs, find text in one URL and at most
you can find exact duplicates. WEBformation offers four methods of finding
similar URLs (automatically marking them). Then there are: finding
predefined URL sets like URLs to download; sophisticated searching
capabilities including adding to a find or finding subsets; integrated URL
downloading, URL validating and so on.
System Requirements

WEBformation is a Filemaker 4 template, not a standalone program. The font
Trebuchet MS is installed with System 8.5 as part of Internet Explorer.
WebPalette, a floating window for the browser, needs System 8.5. The
Scripting Addition Sigma's Addition is necessary. To validate your URLs Big
Brother is used and WebDevil or Anarchy for directly downloading URLs.
Sigma's Addition and BigBrother are enclosed. I have included the full
documentation of BigBrother. It is now public domain and no longer
shareware, but the author has not changed the documenation.

At home I have a 7100 with a nice cluster of monitors and the conventional=

docking station I've set up, and switch the control of primary monitor (the=
one in front of me at that point), keyboard and mouse from 7100 to=
PowerBook and back as need be.

The monitor switching works fine, thanks to a monitor A/B switching device=
(which is, incidentally, also a wonderful way to set up a headless computer=
for use as a server: most of the time a monitor can be the monitor for a=
different computer, but with the flick of a button becomes the server=
monitor; both computers think they have a valid monitor of the appropriate=
dimensions available to them at boot-up. But I digress...).

Modem was easy (line splitter, separate modems).

Keyboard and mouse are the sticking points. No one seems to be selling an=
ADB A/B switch??!? I've been doing it manually, a task made easier by the=
4 ADB ports on my MicroSpeed keyboard, but I could get in trouble with=
that...the other day I hit the power-on key and BOTH computers proceeded to=
give me startup chimes, and I realized I had ADB cables from each computer=
hooked to different ports on the keyboard. Naturally, I'd be pleased to=
think I could actually run it this way, but I suspect I'm lucky I still=
have two computers instead of two pieces of expensively burnt toast. =
(Besides, problems could result if I type while staring at screen to one=
computer and data input is also going to the other computer, etc). =20

Heck, ADB connectors only have 4 pins. How damn complicated can it be to=
take knife to cable and make my own A/B switch? Anyone done so? Or,=
anyone seen a commercially available ADB A/B switch?

PS-Thanks to the many helpful people who have responded to my earlier quest=
for Type/Creator changers. It turns out that the most recent version of=
Snitch still works fine with 8.6.

However, I'm still at a loss for a way to reset the PowerBook's internal=
modem, short of shutting down and restarting. I'm still looking for an=
internal modem port resetter of some sort.

According to Dantz's web site, using the Apple Enet extension (v. 2.1.2)
from OS 8.6 in place of the "Ethernet (Built-In)" extension with OS 8.1
will fix network problems on non-G3 PCI PowerMacs.
<http://www.dantz.com/technical_support/technotes/tn-414.html>

This is not an Apple-supported approach to the problem, but Dantz says that
their extensive testing indicates that it both works and fixes the problem.

My problem: how to get a copy of the Enet extension? Since I'm running 8.1,
I can't use the 8.6 updater. There used to be a problem that would extract
individual files from Apple's installer tomes ("Tome Buster" or something
similar?), but I can't find it on the web any longer. (Was Apple unhappy
with it?)

Can anyone point me to such a utility or some other source for the Enet
extension?

10baseT connector and then connect them all to a hub. That's probably your
best and cheapest method. I'm not sure if you've got to get a special hub
to allow the 100bseT connection between the iMacs. Maybe hubs are all the
same but check first.

...And on that subject I ask:
Why does the find by content indexing on my 4Gb drive claim it's going to
take 40 to 60 hours to complete? Just because I'm still running a 604 chip
at 132MHz? I leave it alone to do its own thing so it can have the disk and
processor to itself but at that rate it has not completed an index yet. I
usually resort to a shareware package from Mauisoft called 'Find in Files'
version 2.1.

Subject: Success with 8.6?

Roland and/or Jodi:
It (8.6) has been fine on any of the Macs I've upgraded (8100, 7600,
several iMacs, G3 B&W). The only problem we've found so for is that
SoftArc's First Class Client 3.5.1 quits the second you try to enter
anything into the password field. You have to save the password in the
settings file on a pre-8.6 system or save it before you do the upgrade.
