"Photon Kaleidoscope Sounds"

You can customize the look of your Mac with Kaleidoscope...now you can
customize
the sound, as well! The "Photon" sounds for Greg Landweber's Kaleidoscope is
an
applet that will automatically replace the "window shade" sounds with new,
hi-tech stereo photon buzzes. The sounds are short, but unique, and contain
sounds for both the "close window" and "open window" functions.

The "Photon" sounds for Kaleidoscope can be downloaded here, or at
<http://www.clixsounds.com>, along with several other sets of sounds for
Kaleidoscope.

This file is freeware and redistribution of the archive in its entirety is
welcome. Instructions are included with the file for proper installation.
Note
that a portion of the file is a catalog containing information about the
Clixsounds CD-ROM.

effectively,
you need to download this one. If you are tired of wading through all the
reviews
of software that you will probably never use, the MacAssistant Tips and
Tutorial
Newsletter will not disappoint you. Each issue is packed with useful
information
that the majority of people can actually use.

I am now accepting credit cards. Read the enclosed
"How to Subscribe" document for more info!!

Everybody that subscribes automatically becomes a member of this online user
group. Meetings will be held on AOL and via the Internet Chat Lines. Members

membership for only $12.00 per year. The MacAssistant User Group is registered
with the User Group Connection.

This month the article is the first of a series on building your own web
pages is
enclosed in its entirety.

I am now adding various articles that would be of interest to many of my
readers
>From the Apple Technical Information Library. Also, I have added links to
each of
Apple's major web pages on the internet. There are over 75 links here alone.

The MacAssistant Tips and Tutorial Newsletter only has tips and tutorials. I do
not do reviews in this newsletter. While reviews are useful, I feel that a
newsletter that actually tells you how to use your Mac more effectively is much
more useful to the novice and intermediate users. Each issue includes many tips
about using your Mac. The tutorials are accompanied by graphics that help to
understand the article. More information is being added each month for
subscribers including the Members Helping Members program along with our fellow

has
even more information and tips for those that register. This is a short,
fascinating download well worth the time.

This newsletter is distributed as a DocMaker application. NO other software is
needed.

Subject: [*] AppHider v1.3 - Hides apps from Finder

AppHider - a drag & drop utility v1.3
Copyright 1994-97 by Roland Gustafsson, All Rights Reserved
Requires System 7 or better.

Drag & drop an application to AppHider and the app will be "hidden" from
the Finder.

Why, you may ask, would you want to do that? Well, let's say you have two
versions of the same app and you want the Finder to temporarily use the older
version when launching documents. Just drag the newer app to AppHider and it
will be hidden from the Finder.

An example: SimpleText and TeachText both have the same creator signature:
'ttxt'. If you have both apps installed, chances are that the Finder will use
the latest version, SimpleText, for all 'ttxt' created files. To force the
Finder to use TeachText instead, without erasing SimpleText, simply drag
SimpleText to AppHider. Another popular use is to hide Word 6.0 in favor of
5.1
- with AppHider you can have both installed!

To undo a hidden app, simply double click on the app and AppHider will
unhide it.
(The app will appear as a plain document icon when hidden.) If you hold
down the
control key when double clicking the hidden app, it will be launched instead of
unhidden. (As of v1.2 this action is reversible.)

Changes for version 1.3: Preference option to report errors with dialog instead
of just a System beep. Control key is used instead of option key because
holding
down option when opening a file causes the Finder to close the file's window.
(Thanks to Alan Weissman for pointing out this "unintentional feature" :-)

When an app is first dragged to AppHider, the 'type' is changed to the
'creator'
and the 'creator' is changed to AppHider's signature. When the hidden app is
processed, the 'creator' is changed to 'type' and the 'type' is changed back to
'APPL'. Simple!

I wrote this utility when working on an "updater" that had to deal with 5
different versions of an application - AppHider enabled me to easily "enable" a
given version of the program.

AppHider should work on any Mac running system 7 or better. It isn't PPC native
because it doesn't need to be, trust me! ;-)

AppHider is "ThankYouWare". If you find it useful, all you have to do is say
"thank you". My email address is rolandg@crl.com

CDFinder 1.2.1

CDFinder catalogs CD-ROMs, ZIPs, floppies, SyQuests, and everything else that
turns (even your file server..) and allows you to search for anything in those
catalog files.

It is very fast, supports drag&drop, is PowerPC native (but also fast on any
other Mac with at least a 68020 CPU), and is bilingual (English/German).

CDFinder is shareware (15 US$ for a single user license) and quite popular
already.

The new version launches much faster (especially if you have a lot of catalog
files) due to a catalog cache file it creates. The size of the main window can
now be changed and it is possible to drop more than one volume at once into the
main window. The new "about" window displays a lot of interesting information
about your catalogs and has a link to the CDFinder-Homepage. The "please
insert"
dialog was imporved and now displays the comment and the label of the catalog
as
well as a new menu to eject any currelty mounted volumes. A few minor bugs were
corrected and the speed was improved a little again.

Give it a try!

Subject: [*] ClickPad II 2.2.2

This is ClickPad II version 2.2.2, Copyright (c) 1996-1997 Dan Wright. ClickPad
II is shareware (US$14) - see enclosed "Read Me" for details.

ClickPad II requires a PowerBook with a TrackPad; specifically, the PowerBook
520, 540, and 5300 families are supported. You can now just tap the TrackPad
to
click the mouse button, double-tap to double-click, or tap-drag to lock the
button down for dragging.

Features New or Improved in ClickPad II:
    * ClickPad II is more responsive during heavy trackpad usage and
"dozes" when you stop using the trackpad to reduce CPU & power usage (and
so allowing your PowerBook to sleep).
    * You can now "lock" the trackpad button down, allowing drags and menu
selections without using the (physical) trackpad button. Way cool.
    * ClickPad II provides optional audio feedback.

Version 2.2.2 is strongly recommended for users with Mac OS 7.6 and/or
QuickTime 2.5.

Hotline is a client/server system for transfering files and conferencing with
other people on the Internet (or any TCP/IP network). You can download and
upload files, chat with other Hotline users, and leave news-style messages.

Being specifically designed for the MacOS, it has many advantages over the
traditional protocols such as FTP. For example, Hotline can resume file
transfers (even uploads) after an interruption. Also, files don't have to be
binhexed or macbinary'd, so they won't bloat in size. And when you get a
list of files, the files don't just have generic document icons - they have
mac icons. An application gets an application icon, a picture gets a
picture icon, etc.

HOTLINE REQUIRES OPEN TRANSPORT. You can get Open Transport from the usual

Subject: [*] Midi Thru 1.5 fat - A Software Midi Thru Box - (Replaces

Midi Thru is for use with either OMS or Midi Manager. If you don't know what
these are, then you don't need Midi Thru. Midi Thru simply connects a
controller synth to a slave synth. Midi Thru allows you to slave a synth,
sending on the midi channel of your choice. It's great for those times
when you don't want to fire up a major memory eating sequencing program to
use as a midi thru or when you want to write lyrics in your word processor
and don't have enough memory left to fire up your memory hogging midi
sequencer or if you just want to jam on that favorite synth module. Its a
simple program that does one thing and one thing well. It's a Midi Thru
!!!! Midi Thru works on any mac running sys 7.0 and up with at least 1.5
meg of free ram. Midi Thru is now a Fat Binary, which means it will run in
the fast native mode on power macs. Best of all Midi Thru is absolutely
free of charge. Yes, thats no

Subject: [*] MTX2HTML Version 1.5.5

This is version 1.5.5 of mtx2html.pl, a Perl script for Mac/DOS/UNIX.
It replaces the file found at:

info-mac/text/html/mtx-2-html-pl.hqx

MTX2HTML is a program that builds complex HTML pages from simple text
files. This
update includes support for embedded QuickTime movies; additional text styles:
big, small, superscript, subscript; and page description meta tags. The current
release is always available at:

http://www.med.ufl.edu/medinfo/mtx/

Why use MTX?

MTX is a powerful tool for creating World Wide Web documents. It has several
advantages over other approaches including:

Source files are easy to create and maintain No special editor or editing
skills
are needed Stylistic and functional elements are consistent across all
documents
Repetitive and complex tasks are automated Many high level functional
components
are available

You should consider using MTX if you need to:
Convert existing word processing documents into HTML Create and manage large
collections of HTML documents Integrate HTML documents from several sources and
authors Create interactive question banks with instructional feedback Create
and
distribute presentation slides for lectures

Using MacPerl by Matthias Neeracher, mtx2html.pl can be saved as a
"droplet" allowing drag and drop conversion of files.

MacPerl is available at:
