Subject: [*] Dhammapada 1.3

The Dhammapada is a collection of 423 Buddhist verses, arranged into 26
chapters by topic. It is said by many to contain the essence of the
Buddha's teachings, and is one of the best-loved works in the Pali Canon.

This application generates a verse of the Dhammapada each time it is
opened, making it a nice addition to the Startup Items folder. In
addition, the entire text of the Dhammapada is available for browsing and
reading in the conventional, linear way. Individual verses and chapters
can be saved as text files and printed from the File menu, and the Edit
menu allows copying of the text. If you encounter any unfamiliar terms,
there is a "Useful Definitions" item under the Apple Menu.

Subject: [*] FriezingWorkz 1.0 - investigate frieze groups, or just make nice

FriezingWorks is a freeware HyperCard stack which creates friezes
from what you draw using the seven frieze groups. It has two
purposes. For those interested in transformation geometry, it can be
used to demonstrate and/or explore the seven frieze groups. For
people who aren't so mathematically minded, FriezingWorkz can simply
be used to make nice frieze patterns for use in borders or other
artwork. All you have to do is draw a base pattern and choose which
frieze group you'd like to use for the frieze - FriezingWorkz adds
extra black pixels to make sure the pattern has the required
symmetries, and then makes the frieze.

Five useful utilities:

UltraClip: global glossary saves clipboard text to clipping files named and
placed automatically, or optionally with a name you choose. Loads a
clipping back to the clipboard quickly, optionally appending to existing
text on the clipboard.

Get URL: select the text of a URL in any application, copy, and run this
script. Your web browser is launched (if not already running) and that URL
loads, all in the background.

Show Document: takes the name of the front window of the front application,
goes to the Finder and reveals (opens window of and highlights icon of)
that file.

Liberate Desktops: rebuilds the desktop the right way, and you don't have
to stop working.

Splash Screen: of interest to Applescripters: shows how to add a splash
screen to applets. Two sample sizes are included.

Free. May be included on Info-Mac CDs.

This is the Japanese version of the SwitchBack package.

SwitchBack has been widely used since 1992. Development of a version for
MacOS X is underway. A one-time shareware fee provides a license for all
future versions.

SwitchBack makes it easy and safe to synchronize two disks, so that both
contain your most recently updated documents. Simply choose two folders to
compare, and SwitchBack does the rest, quickly and painlessly.

The two folders can reside on the same or different disks, or on two
computers connected by a network, or even over the Internet. You can ask
SwitchBack to tell you in detail what it is doing, or let it go to work,
only advising you when there's a problem.

It has been designed principally for those people with two computers
(especially desktop and PowerBook) who need to ensure that they have
the most recent version of their documents available to them. It can also
function as a quick and effecient back-up manager.

Many years back, my family bought me a Motorola StarMax 3000/180MHz. It
came with a Motorola LifeStyle 28.8 modem. I no longer use the StarMax, and
now, I have a consulting client who has a REALLY slow modem, and, despite
the fact that the LifeStyle only supports the v3.4 standard (so, as far as I
know, it's not v9.0 compatible), I'd like to give it to them. I've got the
cable, the software, the modem itself... but I'm MISSING THE A/C ADAPTER!!!
I have an A/C adapter from a Hayes 14.4 modem, and a whole bunch of other
adapters, but I don't want to risk damaging the modem by trying them; the
manual is no help, either. Does anybody own one of these, and, if so, what
does the A/C adapter say on it?

I use Amico 2.1.1 without any problems under Mac OS 9.0.4. I've always found
it to be the most intuitive of all the menu-reordering extensions, because
it just uses the natural order of items in the Finder window, rather than
forcing you to use weird naming schemes or run another program to do so. I
heartily recommend it.

The reason that you're not seeing it is that PCs sharing a printer do
not do so via AppleTalk or LPD, which are the two ways that Macs can
natively use printers. Conversely, a LaserWriter 4/600PS hooked to a
Mac running LaserWriter Bridge is still just an AppleTalk printer, &
as such would not be seen by a PC unless the PC is running special
software. The network printers are actually serving themselves by via
AppleTalk or LPR.

Hope this helps,
