Subject: FMPro 3.x secret?

Somewhere in-betweenst adding wonderful new if-then protocols to old
Filemaker database and popping in a couple of relational files, I had
the sudden urge to see if Claris had fixed what I regarded as FmPro 2.1
glitches -- could I go into Find mode and pop some values in this layout
and then go to this other layout to pop in some more values and then hit
return and have it actually work? Would I be able to open button defs
and get a scrollbar on righthand side so as to be able to rapidly drag
down thru the couple hundred scripts instead of having to watch it
scroll thru in slow motion? In calculation-field defs, could I go to
"fields" windows and type first couple letters and have it jump down
without having to scroll thru? Hmm, come to think of it, could I open
scripts and type first couple letters...?

Can report one hit amongst misses, but is NOT documented in the RTFM.
UsersGuide for Fm3.0 warns you that in Find mode you gotta make sure
all fields you wanna do finds in is on same layout. But--!!! is not
true! Go ahead, you try! Go Find, type something in layout "a"
that isn't in layout "b", go to layout "b" type something in field
that doesn't exist in layout "a", hit return, proverbial voila!

You think Claris knows this? Naaah, maybe in backrooms chained to
coding cubicles someone gotta know, but techsupport for Claris =
uninformed of much. FileMaker is more cool than any manual says.
Unintentional easter eggs all over the place. F'rinstance, was
told if you are trying to set up stations that will be guests,
they gotta launch FMPro, go "Hosts", select file. Wouldn't work
to just doubleclick icon of specific main database file. Hmm...
most funny thing, they said same for FmPro 2.1 too, they wrong
then. I try under 3.0, first time as guest actually do get bad
error messages. (FWIW, good enthusiastic Claris techsuppt psn
on such subject advise: "Make dummy database, on open launch
script is gonna open *across network* as potential guest the
file, you choose once, save script".) That work. But also,
after first time instructing localguest machine on how to open
actual remote file, FileMaker remember from then on to open as
potential guest over network. Just put alias for doubleclicking
on all host boxes. Even cross platform, using Norton Desktop
for maximum Macifization of OtherwiseForsaken PC interface,
or else by MSWindows95 using "shortcuts" as second best sol'n.
After 1st attempt with DialogBox info-provision, manages to
recall for subsequent attempts that database best accessed
over network to machine <machine-name>:filepath:here.fp3

Much wonderful scripting capabilities even allow programmer to
set diff scripts all over the place if user notequals primary
(host) user. Less useful is failure to set scripts such that
if password=x then y.

>From previous msgs to this list many readers understand I was
wanting for cross-platform concurrent filesharing solution. The
Claris folks, upon understanding we got macs and Win3.1 boxes,
at that time 2.1 FmPro databases, was saying "Get Novell". The
cost of getting full cross-platform Novell was way exorbitant.
Even discussed possibilities for using SoftWindows. Dragged on
on and on. Only after buying DAVE for crossplatform filesharing
upgrading to 3.0 FmPro did I discover that both these purchases
unnecessary--coulda used common protocol IPX on both platforms,
didn't need to mount anyone's shared volumes, didn't have to
upgrade to 3.0 version, certainly didn't have to shell out for
expen$ive Novell softwares, didn't even have to have bought the
cheaper x-platform DAVE. If Claris supportfolks honest and know-
ledgable, could've said to boss, we gotta install only IPX stuff
everything else way cool.

Ignorance of how easy it is to do crossplatform = penalty flags for Claris. Gr
ow up and learn, please. Know what your way cool software can do.

But...ignoring reasons for expensively/expansively acquiring same, combo of
DAVE + TCP/IP common local protocols (later to add t1) plus FMPro 3.0 =
mac-centric administrative database management solution without Novell.

= Goodthing.

(Now please Claris fix other above-mentioned glitches, yes?)

You can still buy them as "spare parts" instead of "accessories" and
they therefore cost much more. Approx $150 here in Sweden. My solution
was to buy a generic lead-acid
6v 3.4 Ah at the swedish Radio Shack (Claes Ohlson) and connected it
with wires to
the battery connectors. Not the best solution, but cheap.

I have exactly the same problem. I even bought new lithium batteries:
didn't help.
Right now i simply never disconnects the lead-acid battery and maintain
the correct date
that way.

Maximized Software has just released the world’s fastest log file
analyzer, FlashStats v. 1.1. On a Pentium 133, FlashStats can analyze
20MB of log data per minute. Featuring 10 different customizable
reports, FlashStats can tell you how heavily your site is being used,
and by whom. Find out which pages are most popular, how users are
finding your site, which browsers they are using, who has valid links to
your site and more.

A demo of the program is available at: http://demo.maximized.com/ , and
a fully functioning 30 day trial download can be obtained at:

FlashStats is an excellent solution for ISP’s who need to be able to
allow individual clients to generate their own reports on the fly. The
password protected browser interface allows multiple users access to
their own site’s logs. FlashStats is also useful for intranets where
different departments and managers may need different reports. Each
person can run their own set of reports to see only those details that
interest them.

FlashStats supports the most popular web servers, as well as any web
server generating common or extended log formats, including: Apache,

Subject: ApplePhone docs? (Q)

I've recently installed the Apple Telecom 3.0.3 software that comes bundled
with the PM 8500 (on the 7.5.5 CD). I'm trying out ApplePhone, but I can't
seem to find a manual for it (either a book, an electronic version on the CD,
or an online version in the software). The ApplePhone software is fairly
straightforward, but some features, such as remote message retrieval, don't
seem to work as it would appear they should. I'd like to RTFM before wasting
anyone's time with specific questions, but I can't *find* a manual!

Does anyone know where I can find user documentation for Apple Telecom 3.0.3
(and ApplePhone, AppleFax)?

Has anyone had compatibility problems between Telecom 3.0.3 and System 7.6 or
7.6.1?

Should I install the Telecom 3.1.1 update that I downloaded from Apple?

Any good things or bad things to say about ApplePhone (I'm currently a
MegaPhone 1.02 user)?

Thanks for your help!

Subject: CE Software QuicKeys PowerMac Native finally released

Dear Digest readers,
CE Software finally released two weeks ago a PowerPC Native version (3.5.2)
of its
wonderful QuicKeys package. They also have a 1.8MB downloadable binhex 4.0
upgrade at their
web page.

With all the crashes due to its being non-native, I have periodicly disabled
it when I was doing non-webbrowsing. Now hopefully its problems are fixed.

For those of you who haven't heard of QuicKeys, it is an excellent macro
program that works in all applications. Macros can also be launched from a
toolbar like the control strip, although QuicKeys can have separate floating
toolbars unlike the control strip.

Can't drag-drop items onto the toolbar, but maybe that will be in another
version.

Visit http://www.cesoft.com for more information.

Hope this helps.

Subject: network problems/PortSharePro

I'm suffering problems with the Ethernet network.

Two Mac are connected via Ethernet (PMac 8500 + PMac 7600, running System
7.5.4, Open Transport 1.1): the 8500 has a HP 560 printer connected to the
printer port and a HP600 plotter connected to the modem port.

We're using PortSharePro 2.4 (by Stalker) to share the plotter and the
printer with the 7600. Note that printer and plotter aren't on the Ethernet
network; PortSharePro make 'virtual ports' on the network.

Time by time it happens that the Appletalk control panel sets itself to
printer port, instead of Ethernet. This way of course the network won't
work. At the same time the printer (on the 8500), by itself, get connected
to the modem port instead of the printer port.

Hope it's all clear to you. Not to me. Why the Appletalk switch to printer
port??
When I try to switch Appletalk back to Ethernet, it says it's not possible
because an error occured trying to connect to Ethernet...

Well tech support eventually did contact me, and seemed genuinely
baffled at the symptoms I was getting. It sounded like they really
wanted to get to the bottom of this, and they scheduled a conference
call for a few days later. I had run a conflict test back in January
and had "proven" that their program blew up with only Apple extensions
running. But if I was soon going to be talking with a couple of
techies, I'd better review my data.

This time I did things a bit differently. I reasoned that since the
Britannica search engine is AppleScript based, I would include
Scripting Additions in the conflict test. Aha! I could now make this
fatal problem come and go!

Part of the file deletion problem (and all of a previously hidden
killer) seem to be caused by an Addition called 5HOTA Speech OSAX(FAT),
which was a remaining part of an installation of something I picked up
at Info-Mac and later trashed.

Summary:

Britannica CD 97 does NOT trash its own files WHEN INSTALLED PROPERLY!

It is somewhat buggy, but not seriously so. And there are workarounds
that work.

Because its content comes from the Dead-Tree-Edition of the Britannica,
there is a whole lot of information packed on this CD, but don't expect
any big multimedia flash.

Yes it IS very slow. Being based on both Netscape and AppleScript, it
takes a while to do even a simple search.

I'm not throwing away my Grolier's or American Heritage, but I'm
holding on to Britannica too.

Subject: PPP problems

I thought I'd ask everyone out there for a little help. I seem to be having
some problems with PPP and Web access.

The computers concerned are in my office. The power supply died on one, so
I had to configure another one to access e-mail and the internet. Now, for
some reason, I can access our e-mail account, but if I send Navigator out
after a URL, it tells me there is no such address. From the status
indicators on the PPP Control Panel, I can tell it's not even attempting a
connection through PPP.

For the specifics, I'm running system 7.5.5 on an 8100/80AV (80 MHz/16 MB
RAM), on a Localtalk network. I'm using a Geoport Telecom Adapter (ugh),
with the newly acquired Telecom Software v3.1 to boost its speed. I'm
running OT 1.1.2 and PPP 1.0 from Apple. I was using Netscape Navigator
3.0, but now I'm using Eudora Light since I only have e-mail access anyway.
I also tried MS (gasp) Internet Explorer and Cyberdog 1.2 (on OpenDoc 1.1).

Nothing seems to work, and I can't figure out why I can get to my POP3 but
not to the web. The SysAdmin says the problem must be on my end, since the
term server accesses the POP3 from the internet anyway. And of course,
since this is all military, he knows nothing about Macs.

Anyway, due to the nature of my problem, I would appreciate a direct e-mail
reply. Thanks in advance for your help.

Subject: QuicKeys 3.5.2 not compatible with System 7.6.1

Dear Digest readers,
But it is compatible with 7.6.0.
QuicKeys 3.5 became PowerPC native a month ago with the release of 3.5.2.
Wonderful Macro utility. Unfortunately System 7.6.1 which was released
yesterday, creates problems for its buttonpads to the point that stop icons
start drawing themselves on the buttonpad and then finally the machine
freezes.
Yikes!

Disabling QuicKeys resolves the problem.

Just thought you might want to be forwarned.

Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
ABRODY@mail.acilink.net

Subject: QuickTime and Premire 4

I have not managed to open some short video clips captured on a friend's
Mac (AV Quadra) hooked up to a VHS deck. She has used Adobe Premiere and
rescaled the clips to one quarter screen size so one 12 second clip
makes a file of about 18 mb.

We sampled down the clips at 15 Frames per second, rescaled them to
about 120 pixels wide and placed them in Director 5 and they worked fine
on her 68K Mac. Using Premiere 4 and Director 5 on my Powermac 7100/66
neither size of clip is viewable in either application. Premiere shows a
black preview screen, Director shows a thumbnail in the Csat but a white
or grey screen in the video window. The file sizes and clip durations
are indicated in the info windows in both applications.

I have imported and viewed other video clips successfully in both
applications: sound and motion work. I am using QuickTime 2.5. I wrote
the files to CD-Rom and when opened in Premiere on my friend's Mac they
worked. Could the problem be between the way a non Powermac machine
saves the file?

What can I do? Help!!

Thanks

Tim

The list hasn't been sent me yet. I've used a phone tap from Radio

What is up? Supposed to be two weeks down only. Maybe noone has written?

Subject: VRAM troubles with Radius 8/1600 card

Hi all,
I'm running a 20" STEP monitor on a Radius Precision Color 8/1600 (Prod. No.
0529 Rev. B) card on my PPC 7500. Since it displayed only 256 colors in the
beginning and began to show "ghost images" all the time, I've inquired with
Radius and they have told me I'd need 2MB additonal VRAM "In order to get
more colors".
That's what I did, and guess what happened - I'm still stuck with 256 colors.
I've asked both the folks at Newer Technologies (who brought us GURU for
information on - regular - RAM requirements) and at Radius whether there is
any program I could check VRAM with (Snooper would not do on the PPC 7500)
and whether they have any clue if I might have bought "bad" VRAM, or just
wasted money on those 2MB - but not received an aswer so far.
Maybe one of you would know.

TIA
Reinhard
