Subject: [*] ImageViewer 6.0 (New Version)

ImageViewer is a powerful and inexpensive Mac (OSX and Classic) multimedia application,
which provides a complete set of image viewing, cataloging, browsing, and editing capabilities.

ImageViewer supports all common image file types including animated GIF, JPEG, PICT, and TIFF, as well as movies, PNG and BMP (with QuickTime 3.0 or later). ImageViewer is great for quick and easy organization of images and movies, and includes support for image transfer from digital cameras, as well as, automated batch processing.

ImageViewer makes extensive use of QuickTime, and fully supports video effects, which
may be used as transitions between images in a slide show, to create multimedia presentations with flair! Save transition frames to create beautiful animated images.

ImageViewer automates and greatly reduces the tedium of constructing HTML thumbnail pages ("contact sheets"). There are extensive options for creating html pages, which can be made "web ready" or used for platform independent local browsing.

System Requirements:

Any Macintosh compatible computer
32MB of RAM or more
OSX or System 8.6 or greater (9.0 or greater suggested)
CarbonLib 1.2.5 or greater
QuickTime 3.0 or greater

Subject: [*] English Verbs 2.1 - foreign language learning

'English Verbs 2.1' is a plug-in module for the 'Verbs & Nouns'
language-learning program. This module helps Macintosh users to study and
practise the inflection of English verbs. It is useful to native English
speakers and to students learning English as a foreign language. It
contains 8600 English verbs. You can change or delete existing entries, add
new words, and construct groups of verbs that you want to practise. You can
also add translations to the language of your choice.

To use 'English Verbs' you must have the application program 'Verbs &
Nouns'. You can download it from Info-Mac sites around the world (navigate
to 'Education' and 'Language'), for example:
<ftp://mirrors.aol.com/pub/info-mac/edu/lang/> or using the WWW page at
<http://users.netmatters.co.uk/dandaforbes>.

If you use the unregistered version of 'Verbs & Nouns', you can see only 59
English verbs in the main scroll-lists. To see all the verbs, you must
register your copy of 'Verbs & Nouns'. The module itself is free.

For up-to-date information about this and related software, visit:

Ç Printing options: diplayed columns, font and font size (Preferences).
Ç 30 entries in the category list instead of 20.
Ç Transactions import from a Quickenü QIF text file ("Investment account
transactions", "Category list", "Class list", "Account list" and "Memorized
transaction list" data are not imported).
Ç Transaction list export as a Quickenü QIF text file.
Ç Transaction list scrollbar position is saved.
Ç Switch between current / future / reconciled balance by clicking on the
display.
Ç PC formatted text file import.

b) Fixed bugs:

Ç Incorrect future balance when printing.
Ç Printing in the Carbon version not working.
Ç Description display when printing a filter.
Ç Incorrect transaction list scrollbar behavior in the Carbon version.
Ç Incorrect display when selecting transactions using the arrow keys.
Ç Incorrect sorting of transactions with the same date.
Ç Now uses system defined decimal separator when exporting transactions as a
tabulated text file.

c) Removed features:

Ç "Initial balance" field in the account info: a transaction with the name
"Opening balance" is automatically created instead.
Ç Category and checkmarks options when importing transactions from a
tabulated text file.

Hold-Up was created by Pierre-Olivier Latour and Didier Larue. It is
distributed as a shareware for US $20 (Basic version) or US $30 (Pro
version).

Like any other personal finance manager, you can manage several accounts,
enter an unlimited number of transactions, create scheduled transactions,
define categories, payment types...

BUT here's why this product is way better than other products available now:
Contrary to others personal finance managers, Hold-Up has a nice and very
well designed user interface, and most important, it has exclusive features
like:
Ç powerful filters (which display only transactions that match some

Subject: [*] Icon Machine 3.0b7J - Japanese version

This is the Japanese version of the Icon Machine package.

Icon Machine is a Macintosh icon editor designed to take advantage of
the great features of the Mac OS to give you the power to make the icons
you want.

Now updated and redesigned for editing all icon sizes from 16x12 Mini to
Mac OS X's 128x128 Thumbnail, and Carbonizedfor Mac OS X, Icon Machine
is a great tool for creating icons for applications, customized folders,
eye-catching documents, and everything else.

"The Photoshop of icon editors!"
- Andrew Miller

"Icon Machine has a way of making a little square of 1024 pixels feel
like an expansive painter's canvas."
- Eric Prentice, MacTips

Changes in version 3.0b7:
- When you drag an icon onto a Small or Huge, 8-bit or 4-bit icon well
and the 1-bit version doesn't exist, the 1-bit well redraws to show that
it's no longer empty. The 1-bit icon was always being added, it just
wasn't being redrawn immediately.
- Added command key equivalents for the Show/Hide commands in the Window
menu.
- The Show/Hide Mask command now works.
- Fixed a bug where if you open a new editing window and the text tool
is already selected, the text tool's menus would be disabled.
- Fixed some problems (including a crash) that could happen if you use
an Open or Save dialog while an editing window was in front.
- Fixed a bug where when you made a selection in a large window (like a
Thumbnail icon at 4x), the selection contents were initially not drawn.
- Fixed the display of the disabled transparency popup button, and it is
now disabled for 8-bit icons.
- Added popup arrows to the color and pattern popup buttons.
- Fixed the clickable URL in the about box in OS X.
- Launching the Register application from Icon Machine's registration
dialog and then quitting it no longer triggers an exception alert in
Icon Machine.
- The registration dialog works better. Rather silly of me not to have
fixed this particular bit sooner.
- Fixed the -36 error that happened when saving icons in OS X.

Subject: [*] Snak 4.7.1

Snak is a program that will let you participate in discussions in
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) channels. A channel is like a virtual
meeting room where people meet and talk.
Snak will let you connect to multiple servers at the same time and
the servers do not have to be on the same network. Therefore you can
participate in channels on multiple networks if you so desire.
At any given time the largest of the IRC networks may have as many as
35,000 participants. Almost anyone can find a channel that focuses on
a topic of interest. It is estimated that at any given time there are
several hundred thousand people using IRC across the various networks.
Snak has a very flexible interface that supports multiple channels in
one window, and the Contacts list integrates the built in address
book with the notify and ignore functions. Snak comes with an
extensive manual and introduction to IRC so you will get up to speed
quickly.
Snak supports both the scripting language from the classic ircII
client for shell access accounts, so you can tap into the wealth of
existing ircII scripts, as well as Ircle-style Applescripts.

Any computer does a check of memory on boot. The more memory, the

Folks;

Please forgive if this is a FAQ. Does anyone know of any audio recording
software that will havndle web streams, similar to TotalRecorder for the
Windoze world, for the classic MacOS? (Basically, this software creates a
driver that sits between the machine and the audio subsystem, "stealing"
anything headed for the subsystem and writing it to disk first before sending
it on its way.) I've been recording external outputs since the Mac Plus and
MacRecorder (all those who remember then, sigh for your lost youth), but I'm
wondering if there's a way to record some real-time web streams when I'm out
for later listening. (Yeah, I'm talking about time-shifting Internet
radio...go figure.) Freeware, shareware, or commercial is fine, doesn't
matter.

I will cheerfully summarize for the list, if there's enough information.

Subject: Crucified by PostScript problems - Please Help!

In my office I have a venerable Laserwriter II NT which has given me
excellent service for nearly 10 years and a more recently acquired
second-hand Laserwriter 4/600 PS. About 18 months ago - coinciding roughly
with my move from System 7.5 to OS8.x - my ttempts at printing began to fail
with 'PostScript error' messages. At first this was sporadic but it
gradually grew in significance until now these PS errors have become a major
problem, significantly interfering with my work.
The following points are relevant:
(1) The errors occur with both printers, irrespective of whether one or the
other is connected to my Mac via a single printer cable or both are connected
simultaneously via one of those cables with little boxes at regular intervals
- I forget the technical term. This would suggest that the printers
themselves are not to blame.
(2) The errors have persisted through various versions of the MacOS from 8.1
through 8.6 up to 9.1 and several clean installs of each. This would suggest
that system or font problems are not to blame.
(3) The errors persisted when I replaced my original PPC 8200/120 with a G3
MiniTower suggesting that a hardware problem is not the cause.
(4) No improvement was noted when I gave PrintMonitor memory a significant
boost.
(5) The documents I print almost all originate in Word 5.1a or Word 98 -
although the problem also showed today when I tried to print text from
SimpleText and from a Web page in Explorer 5. With a few exceptions,
documents originating on my machine have a maximun of two fonts - usually
Times New Roman or Bookman with Symbol.
(6) The problem occurs with large documents and small, with pasted-in
graphics or none. Sometimes page-by-page printing helps, sometimes it
doesn't. Sometimes a document which printed sucessfully on an earlier
occasion now fails - sometimes the reverse happens.
I am now at my wit's end and the considerable time wasted around printing is
eating into my productivity. I will be eternally grateful to anyone who can
give me a handle on this infuriating problem.
TIA -
Fergus Lalor

button on the monitor, the computer will power up, but it won't boot-up -
not even a gray screen on the monitor. Once this happens, I press the
reset button and then it boots up fine. Seems to be randomly and
irregularly common around the room. Could this be a firmware problem?
Thanks in advance.

Subject: looking for a pop-up menu Finder hierarchy utility

Hi all,

I am the proud owner of a new TiBook (after 11 years away from the
Mac) and I miss a great utility I used to have "way back when". The
utility used to allow me to click and hold the mouse over a folder- I
would then get a pop-up menu of all items in that folder- including
other folders, which I could select to get hierarchical menus of all
items (including all folders) within that folder.

The (I hope obvious) advantage here was that you didn't have to open
(and then close) all the enclosing folders to get to something (or
click on the triangles to show them in the other Finder mode) and it
made it really easy to scan through a hierarchy quickly, going up and
down and in and out of any folder.

So, my question is: do any of you know of any utility that would do
that for me in MacOS 9.x?

Please reply to me (solutions@idaq-ltd.com) as I'm not (yet)
subscribed to this list...
Much TIA,
E. Blasberg

P.S. - I know about the 1.5 click to get the magnifying glass to
spring open folders. Unfortunately, this does not give me the
possibility of going back up the hierarchy once I've scanned the open
folder and not found what I was looking for.

Sounds like its the inital memory check you're waiting for.

the computer is checking the installed ram at bootup
the more ram you have the longer it will take
you can turn off this feature by cmd-opt doubleclicking
the memory controlpanel

Chris,

Sounds like the memory test. To disable it -

With the Command and the Option keys held down, open the Memory
control panel. This will allow you the extra option, Startup Memory
Tests, the bottom test. Select the OFF box. That should make a big
difference.

Your machine is doing a RAM integrity check. If you are running 8.1
or 9.x, you can hold the option and apple (command) keys down while
opening the Memory Control Panel, you'll find a new option "Startup
Memory Tests". Click the Off radio button and enjoy quicker startups.

Now for a question to the forum - does anyone know how to do the
equivalent function (disable startup memory tests) in OSX?
